Who has planted these before?
Looking thru some old seed and found...
Juanne Flamme Druzba Eva Purple Ball Prize of the Trial Charles Herring's Porter Matina Would like your opinion if you have planted these in the past. I live in VA, hot and very humid Thanks, Barry Last edited by barryla61; February 24, 2014 at 03:58 PM. |

Eva Purple Ball and Flamme are good performers here.

I grew Prize of the Trial several years ago in an area where it was neglected. It's hot in OK and it kept producing through the heat. They were small, orange, golf ball sized tomatoes.

Always grow Flamme, Druzba, Prize of the Trials, and Matina. Flamme for it's beauty combined with great flavor. Prize of the Trials is like a mini Flamme. Druzba is a great flavored all purpose tomato. Matina is my go to early producer. I have some started already to get a jump on the season. They will go into gallons before getting planted out.

Druzba performs well as an indeterminate here. Very good tasting red tomato.

Eva Purple Ball is a nice pink usually flawless tomato. I eat them for lunch in the summer just the right size for one person. Juan Flamme was very productive here but I like pink or red tomatoes and discriminate against the yellow orange ones. You should try it; it is small and would add color and variety to a salad.

Fact is, there are many states south of you that have high temps and humidity as well and I know many who have also grown the ones I just mentioned. Based on that I think they'd be fine choices for VA,\\Carolyn Carolyn

Another vote for Jaune Flammee. It handles the heat here pretty well, as does Porter, Charles Herring or otherwise. Druzba is a flat out wonderful tasting tomato but it seems to sulk for me once the heat sets in.

Eva's Purple Ball. Nice producer. Fruit is perfect in appearance. Taste is very good. Planting again this year. Probably every year until something nocks it out of the place it's earned in my garden. Can't wait because that will be some tomato!

I've grown two of those, Jaune (not Juane) Flamme, and Matina. Jaune Flamme is on my grow every year list. The plants are not huge, but are very prolific and have a great taste. Matina is another "early" that I have stopped growing because this and a few others just aren't tasty enough. If I'm patient and wait just another week or two there are much better choices.

prize of the trials was my worst plant last season. disease hit early and production was greatly diminished. Not sure if taste was impacted but i did not like it at all. with so many to choose from i will not be growing prize of the trials again

Can anyone tell me the name origin of Prize of the Trial? Is "trial" a reference to bad weather?

I assume that it was the best is some set of plant trials. This site
seems to confirm that. http://nittygrits.org/prize_of_the_trials_tomato Quote:
