Which Extra Early is Best?
I am looking at Kotlas, Matina, or Stupice to go along with Kimberly and Silvery Fir Tree as my extra early tomatoes. Which of these three would be best?
Thanks MikeInCypress |

Michael-I like Kotlas, but you cannot go wrong with either of the three. I grow Matina and Stupice also.

I preferred the flavor of SFT (not a full tomato flavor, but has some spice and acidity to it) to Stupice (flavorless in this reviewer's opinion when grown as a fall crop).

Stupice, for taste and production. Hot weather here and the SFT just takes a dive.-R

I thought Silvery Fir Tree was a great plant for a container. It grew vigorously and loaded up with fruit, but then when hot weather hit, I had the same experience as Rena ... pfffffft ... no matter how careful I was to water it and prune off withered foliage. Same for the three SFT grown in the dirt.
Early Girl in a container right next to SFT was nearly impossible to kill even when I got tired of messin' with it and left it to die ... it refused. Never grew Kotlas or Stupice. All ten or so Matina went down to dampening off as small seedlings just after showing their second set of true leaves. |

Kimberly and SFT were both early and god for me but Taxi was not only early but a tomato producing machine!

I will have to agree with Papa Vic.......the early girl is next to impossible to kill. I had early girl in a 5 gallon bucket on the porch between Kimberly and SFT and the SFT was the first to go then Kimberly a month later and I was still picking early girl in late September.

Of the three you're asking about, I've only grown Matina, but I did think it made a great early. It actually makes a decent cooking tomato too.

Of those 3 I've only grown Stupice and until last year (trialing other varieties and lacked space) it was an annual presence among our tomato varieties. Kids loved the smaller size, production has been excellent and consistent throughout the season, and I think the taste is very good for a smaller tomato. It will be back in my garden this year and FWIW I'll be trying out Kimberly also. Good luck with your selection, doubt you can go wrong really based on comments about all 3 varieties I've seen here and elsewhere.
