Green Sapote
The Green Sapote (Pouteria viridis) is one of many sapote-named fruiting plants. The fruits have a greenish skin, red flesh, and one or two large dark brown seeds. It is native to southern Mexico and central America in areas also native to Guatemalan avocados. It tolerates very temperate areas of USDA zone 10b and above.
I've wanted to grow this plant for a couple of decades and now have the climate and space to do so. Now that the weather is warm enough to plant, I went to the home of a collector in Fountain Valley CA to buy a tree. But at $35 per 5-gallon plant I just couldn't resist -- so I came home with three! I will train them in 15 gallon pots this spring; plant one of them; keep another as backup; and give the third to the local CRFG chapter.
