growing season....what a concept ! LOL

Today we have a High of 14 C ! and rain...

We can have 200 days frost free ...but regrettable

low Heat degree days ...very cool .

Hence Cool Coastal readiness required .

Some years even on the coast it can be argued we have had no summer...

with less than 5 days above 20C before first week of August....

Some years we have had August in May (MAgust) and then the rest of the
season is typical cool...

Right now we are having a cool goose-bumpy " Junetober " spell.

Russian ones (Zolotoy Korol, Zolotoy Serdtse) not so.
good observation to note .....

I don't think there is anything wrong with them ....but ..

They are noted as Container friendly and Large fruited ..

Folks may be annoyed at me ...but I Just wanted to see

Which of the Large fruited selection did best in 7 gallon containers here etc.

I did not filter much for consideration of Flavor...or if they were "Rocks"

Just ...If I can get Tomatoes, Large Tomatoes, ...Lots of Large Tomatoes,

In this cool container environment ..Trial.

earlier is better ...but I can also wait mid season ...for the better tasting ones ...etc. ( Brandy Fred is looking awesome ...just later ).

lol....I am sure that nice moderator lady in NY is most likely right about the

actual fruit quality ...but amazingly enough .... fruit quality is not the prime

challenge at this stage of exploration Trial here .

Sorry if we offend with this Tomato sacrilege.....

It may be the case ...they end up to be a "10 + gallon container" one

and not as easygoing happy in 7 gallons etc.

We had the opposite, no winter last year, temps fell below freezing only twice. I am going to try to grow tomatoes this winter.

Spring/ summer went A.W.O.L for a bit around here.....

still only 19C for a high today ...but the next 5 days look like summer for next 5 days ...which some years ....could be it for the season around here ...LOL

sounds like with very little cover you could use Siberian "cool tolerant tomatoes "

in your winter "window"......In your latitudes you get more light in winter months than we do at 49th -50th parallel etc.

But I guess things go to Hot pretty quick around there and those Siberian cool ones do not tolerate the heat well at all.

sounds like a short window ...of the cool ,

for cool tolerant , early ....even Container friendly ?

Not all are Siberian ...

but for a while I liked

Siberia (rugose dwarf ) (not to be confused with "Siberian " regular leaf non-dwarf )

Yaponskiy karlik

Sasha's Altai

Gregori's Altai

Silvery Fir

0-33

I have had luck (early cool) with Black Prince

I have to recommend EM Champion

and Betalux (polish ) might be good too

Default First Blush by Velmozha

wow Today I noticed Velmozha has

slightly smaller fruit than EM Champion but a few more so far and ....First fruit Blush !

I guess with the calculation you may have for the cultivare in the container ..

do you want bigger fruit ?...could be less fruit and less poundage also.

or not quite as big fruit with more fruit and more lbs. of production ...

I have grown Monomakh's Hat and found them reasonable in Container (larger)
with slightly larger fruit than EM champion ..but less of them compared to
EM champion ...

I guess one way to look at this is that EM Champion and Velmozha compliment each other ....

especially with Loxton Ladd as well .

Default Krasnodor Titans finally sets fruit

so about 2 + weeks after

EM Champion and Velmozha and Loxton Ladd

Krasnodor Titans sets fruit ...
(2 weeks is a significant difference in My cool climate )

BrandyFred still looks like a fine larger dwarf but still no fruit set
Zinulya also no fruit set ....

In the same comparison time period :

Dwarf Pink Passion
Sarandipity
Sweet Adelaide
Rejina yellow
Budai Torpe
Rose Quarz (Multiflora)
Silvery Fir

have set fruit in my garden in this similar time period to Krasnodor Titians .

Default BrandyFred fruit set

BrandyFred has set Fruit (Yum Yum can hardly wait )

so at this point as far as early fruit set and production start goes ...in the 7 gallon trial.

in this matter of "early" fruit set with the 6 Large fruited container varieties

1)EM Champion
2)Velmozha
3) Loxton Ladd
4) Krasnodor Titans
5) Brandyfred

6) Zinulya still no fruit set ....

Other Varieties that set fruit in same time in my garden as BrandyFred :

Sibirska Troika
Yukon Quest
Sophie's Choice
Roza vetrov
Bonte Tigrette

Can hardly wait now !

Yeah, that EM-Champion sounds good. A true heart determinate with wispy leaves, nice size and not sweet taste... how come it's pretty much unknown?
