...and also: how long after germination should I separate and pot up? 3" ok?

I use the dense planting because I sell seedlings - so preparing 4000 or so plants would be impossible without it! My view is also that soilless mix of some sort is vital, esp. in the ease of separating the seedlings and avoidance of diseases. I start potting up when the first true leaves appear, right up until the plants are 2-3 inches tall - they let me know (start looking yellow/poorly if they are tired of being cramped in their cells)

wow, that's really awesome. I think I made my seedlings much more work than they needed to be last year. Started about 100 or so, lost alot of toms and peppers a few weeks from plant out and ended up giving away 20 toms and planting all the peppers and basil I had started.

Next year I plan on starting closer to what I'll plant out and still give away a few excess.

Wow cant believe I missed this post so long. We have a swap meet here each month and I was planning on selling baby chicks at the May one. Guess I might have to start a flat of tomatoes to sell at it too now. I've thought of selling plants, but like most here thought I would need a greenhouse. This is a wonderful system you have Craig!

Just a note to say I modified the title of this, since it does now contain a link to a YouTube video (not very polished, but it should do the trick!) of me demonstrating the technique - at least for the seeding part.

Check the first post in this thread.

Great video, very informative. When you move your seedlings to the garage are you running lights 24/7 or are they on a timer?

Hey Jerry - it is the family timer - one of us plugs em in when we wake up to feed the dogs, and one of us unplugs them when we feed the dogs at dinner time!

Can't thank you enough Craig for taking the time to share your knowledge with us. How often do you water from germination to planting and how much water (during that '8 week' period)? If I need to wait for the coming videos just say so . I had poor results last year and I think it was partly do with overwatering.

Thanks again Craig.

Craig...great video!

Will you be doing another one when you separate the seedlings and re-pot?
