Branch sprout from leaf mid rib

It's something I've never seen before.
The Gardener's Delight (Sugar Lump) plant had a sprout on the mid rib of one of its lower leaves. Now that sprout is turning into a new branch.
I've seen branches form at the end of flower clusters (on indeterminate plants) but this is something new. I'm leaving it alone to see what it does next.

Hello Green Thumb,
I was as surprised as you when I discovered that phenomenon on my Mountain Magic and Crimson Crush in 2018. There wasn't just one shoot on several plants - 3 or 4. It was a very hot year here and I probably had a heavy hand with fertilizers, so the plants were growing very wildly. However, the sprouts were weaker than the regular ones and the cuts I tried to grow from them were not doing very well. I haven't seen that since then.

I have cloned entire plants from just leaves in the past.
Not a surprise.

I actually grew a tomato that weighed over a pound on a leaf branch. My plants put out all the time.

Thanks, slugworth and biscuitridge. I found these "leaf sprouts" on Woodle Orange as well.

That's interesting. How did you clone it from a leaf? Vermiculite, water, or? Maybe the little stem portion of the leaf? I'm not too surprised since plant breeders clone entire plants from just cells.
