I spent a couple of summers mining in the Yukon. 24 hour sunlight in the summer, tremendous gardens there, raised above the perma-frost.

Do you grow tomatoes ioutdoors n Alaska? What is the effect of 24 hour sun on tomatoes?

No I ony work in Alaska no way could you garden this far above the arctic circle.
you might say I am on the north coast.

Hi Jeff,

With the kind help of my daughter and son-in-law with 2 step ladders. Stapeled plastic around wall perimiters, not in between. Flolded the end plastic over the outside trusses and air-nailed the same 1/2' x 1 1/2" plywood strips I had used for the trusses over top on the end trusses and along the top and base.

4 -55 gal containers for heat storage, humidity and plant water. Grow bags are homemade 7 gal with burlap wick into container below.

I have a friend back in the states who placed an ad in the penny saver paper asking for used sliding glass doors. She says her phone rang off the hook! For a total of 200.00 she purchased enough used sliding glass doors to build a 12'X12" green house using the doors. She did spring for the clear fiberglass panels for the roof but she says she still came in under 500.00 for wood and everything. She had sent me pics (which now I can't find) but it turned out really nice. The glass will last forever and is much cheaper to heat than the plastic. I love that used doors were recycled and that something green will be produced!

Great and even delivered!!! I was amazed she got so many responses but I guess people remodel and have left over stuff. She built a wooden frame and then placed a 2X4 between each door so she could frame each panel in. She calked everything when she was done. It really did turn out nice and for less than 500.00 bucks, how could you lose? She built shelves that were 12X12' with 1X2" boards and made them like a ladder so water would run off. I was really impressed by how nice it looked. And three sliding glass doors equaled 6 panels and I think she said they were about 36 inches with the metal frame so the 12X12 plan was a good one. She even told me that the ad in the Penny Saver was free (I guess you could place a "wanted" ad for nothing!) Who knew???
