Default A possible project for anyone interested next season? Not Indian Stripe.

In 1994 I grew Indian Stripe near a variety called Purple Smudge. I wanted to sell some Indian Stripe seedlings this year, so started some seed - and the plant I chose for my yard ended up as an accidental cross, I believe, between Indian Stripe (medium to large oblate purple) and Purple Smudge (small round pink, but has a purplish shoulder prior to ripening).

check the pics - unripe fruit have the purplish blue blush - the tomato then ripens to a pretty, uniform pink - very productive, 4 ounces, round, with a good, sweet, full flavor. Pics below.

So, I will save plenty of seed. I guess the most interesting possibility is a large oblate tomato with the purplish blue shoulder markings - either in a pink or purple fruit. I hope to have a bit of seed to share (small quantities of) if anyone wants to play around with dehybridizing this one!

Forgot to add that I had two other Indian Stripe seedlings remaining and put them both in small pots - both have set fruit, and they are oblate. So I seem to have chosen the needle in the haystack to grow out the first time!

Well, from the PMs and responses in this thread, suffice to say I will be saving plenty of seed! Shouldn't be tough, as there are lots of fruit on the plant!

I've got a variety of PMs - and am saving plenty of seed, so anyone interested will be able to try this out. The flavor is pretty good, but flavor of F1s should never be the definitive flavor (in the Dwarf project, very ordinary hybrids are giving us wonderful dwarfs) - so don't let the less-than-exciting flavor reports dissuade you from trying this (both Purple Smudge and Indian Stripe have much better flavor than this accidental cross!).

The tomato growth on the plant is very interesting - fruit set is excellent and they appear to spiral up the plant like a helix!

OK - whoever wants to try this, please send me a PM with your mailing address. I've got addresses and the request via PM from Neil G, Jeannine, and awaiting mailing addys from Platys and Travis. so I am missing many mailing addresses from those who expressed interest in this thread.
