Default SWC's at the end of season

I grow my tomato plants in containers, with wicks through holes in the base, taking up nutrient solution from a reservoir.
It is advised that at the end of the season tomato plants should be watered(and fed) very little. Is it then wise, at this time of the year, to abandon the self watering aspect of these systems and hand water when really necessary or would the plants just take up what they need from the reservoir?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

I judge from the dryness of the soil. They don't necessarily need as much water as they do when we're in hot weather.
