Default Preen

Anyone use their organic veggie weed killer? Does it work?

I think it's a steep price to pay for what is just basically corn gluten meal in a pretty package. Less expensive at the feed store.

Having said that, corn gluten meal can be a fairly good pre-emergent if applied on the top layer of soil. Along with a shredded leaf mulch, I use it for my alliums and other root crops to keep weeds to a minimum.

I also use it in the spring on my lawn as both a feed and a pre-emergent.

Edit/add - CGM is not going to kill existing weeds, though.

Also, don't apply CGM in places you plan to plant from seed, unless you will apply at least 90 days before seeding, otherwise you may kill the stuff you seeded.

I also use it on my lawn. I like to put down dry molasses a few weeks before the cgm to increase microbe activity.

Default Is GMO corn used to make this product?

I purchased Preen to control crabgrass but now my concern is that this preemergent might contain GMO corn since more than 50% of the commercial corn and soybeans in the United States is grown from GMO Seed. On other hand using corn gluten can reduce the need for other toxic herbicides. Since I am a home gardener I decided to continue to weed by hand.

I have used corn gluten meal, and it works great. Feeds the lawn, stops weeds from emerging. Had to stop using it because it attracted so many birds my wife banned it!
