tomtato
Has anyone ever grown or grafted a tomtato?
I want to try it this season. I just don't know when to plant a patato. How fast do they emerge and grow? I have sown my tomatoes 3 days ago. |

If you are talking about planting a piece of a tuber they emerge with a diameter many times bigger than a tomato seedling. What I would do is to start a potato in a pot now so that you can see what they are like when they first start growing. It will also give you a sense of timing. You should be able to start another one later with a better sense of timing.
Warning I've never done it. I just know that tomato seedlings are small when they are young and potato starts are much bigger. I also know that light, temperature and fertility of the potting mix all affect the size of a tomato seedling as any particular age. That's why I hesitate to make a guess about timing in days. If I had to absolutely make a guess I'd say a 10 day old potato and a 6 week old tomato plant would have about the same diameter stem. Unless someone answered here that has done the graft I would start potato plants on something like a 5 day interval, keep careful notes, and figure that one will be the same size as a tomato plant sometime in the future. Other threads that talk about grafting. http://www.tomatoville.com/showthread.php?t=30148 http://www.tomatoville.com/showthread.php?t=16617 http://www.tomatoville.com/showthrea...t=23212&page=2 |

My plan is to use a very early tomato variety (Bonset) and a late potato variety. (sarpo Mira)
I think I will plant the potato in April. In the meanwhile I'll let some sideshoots of a tomato grow, which I will use to graft. I saw some youtubes to learn about patatoes |

Potatoes from tubers will (IMO) be a nogo for grafting. They grow really fast and really strong in the first few weeks compared to tomatoes, and are much thicker.
Probably the solution is to start the potato from seed. I haven't started from seed but I know they will definitely be thinner. You should browse some UK forums, there's more experience there with this. |

Ah, a good tip!
How fast does a potato plant grow from seed? Internet is not really helpful. |
