My parents love the variety "jelly-bean" and the seed packet I had for them had the same white coating on the seeds ... I trhought it helped germination ~

Richard,

Just plant them ... the coating is a grey or white clay.
(Maybe in Mississippi, they should make it red clay, huh?)
It get wet, dissolves ... or crumbles rather ...
and the seed sprouts. No crackin' or scarring necessary.

The coating is just to facilitate planting either with your fingers,
or with a seeder.

The packet probably said "25 coated seeds" or "25 pelleted seeds."
Same difference. (Been to Wal*Mart or Lowes again, huh?)

Richard,

Yeah, I stopped in Hopkinsville, KY on the way back from Nashville yesterday,
and the Wal*Mart there had their Burpee and their Northrup King seed packs out.

The Burpee Wal*Mart packs already have been talked about near to death ...
The NK Wal*Mart packs essentially are the same as the Lowes NK packs ...
except the Wal*Mart packs are 97c each.
I picked up some Jet Star in the NK packs.
They were those "20 pelleted seeds" kind.
I also got two packs of the NK/Wal*Mart Brandywines
(200 mg. uncoated seeds each) and
one pack of NK/Wal*Mart Jubilee
(500 mg. uncoated seeds).
I'm gonna try to cross the Jubilee with Sun Gold
and with Red Lightening this summer.

What'd your sister get?

She picked up the Big Boy for herself and she picked up some of the Early Girl and Jet Star she said for me but she doesn't know this but out of the 50 plants she has me starting for her she's gonna get a few of the other ones also.
Dang it i just got off the phone with her and she wanted to know what the others were going to be and she told me and i quote (i don't want any funky colored ones just red!) so now i gotta go a rootin in my seeds to find some reds. Hmmmm! Mabey i can at least get some pink heirloom ones in there!

Okay, Richard ...

I really have no idea what it's like
to grow up with a sister ...
But as far as brothers go ...
Seems to me though
it would just be right
to go ahead and give'r
a few of whatever kinda tomatoes
you think are good to go ...
and let her find out the hard way.
I know that's what I'd do
to either one of my two brothers
And laugh about it
'Cause if they didn't like it
they had it comin' anyhow

PV...thanks for clearing up the "coated" and "pelleted" issue. I thought those terms referred to the anti-fungal red coating they sometimes put on things like corn, and I've avoided them.

Pepper,

I think those are referred to as "treated" seeds. Some of the tomato seeds I get from Stokes are treated with a pinkish powdery substance that I assume is a fungicide or such.

Anyway, the tomato seeds that say "coated" or "pelleted" on the packet have all been the ones with the clay coating and looked like little grey BBs.
