Some Older Varieties

I wrote this part on another thread tonight - "I took back most of a bag of Pennington Professional Potting Mix. The bag I bought wasn't ready to be sold - It wasn't decomposed enough, and I used it for potting up my tomato plants... bad idea."

There's a chance the tomato plants I potted up will make it, but Jan and I bought 6 varieties today. Two of them are varieties grown in the 1800s - maybe before?

I loved Red Pear, it stayed relatively small while producing lots of juicy and tasty little pear-shaped bits.

Red Pear is one that I have wanted to grow. Looking up history on the Internet makes me wonder if Red Pear is the oldest variety of tomato still being grown today? I know, take internet sites with a grain of salt, but still.

Red Pear for me had tough skins. But I think it is my weather. I'll have to try it again. I think my seed was from SSE.

I adore black cherry, but, almost every year it gets mold and is a battle to keep alive. This year, I skipped it. Hope that sungold will scratch my cherry tomato itch!

sungold, ron's carbon copy, atomic grape are probably my top three for cherries

Barb recommended Tokita's other hybrids, so I'm trying SunChocola. Maybe Sunpeach later.

That Rainbow Mix is not the name of one variety, probably. Sounds like a bunch of heirlooms of different colors? Is this one plant you bought, or a set of plants you bought, or seeds?

Nan, it is just one plant. I'm thinking it will produce tomatoes that weigh less than a pound - but who knows what color? Jan chose it, so I have to grow it.
