Brown spider with tan stripe down the backside
I have done a search online for spiders and the only kind I think this spider might be is an Orb Weaver. I walked into a spider web and it tore so I took the spider that was on it and placed it in a plastic bag, I brought it inside for some photos. I cannot figure out what it is and if it is a good guy that won't hurt me I want to get it back out there fast.
This spider is a light tan with some dark stripes on it's legs and it has a tan stripe right down the middle of the backside with a darker brown stripe at a 45 degree angle on each side of the tan stripe. These brown stripes point toward the front of the spider and join the tan stripe about halfway down the backside of the spider. When I look at the bottom side I can see an oblong brown outlined section. I have never seen one of these in the garden and wonder what it might be? I took photos but can't seem to figure out how to get them off the new camera, ughh, my other camera was so much easier to operate. Any thoughts on this?

I assume all spiders are beneficial in the garden. I occasionally saw a black widow spider in the raspberry patch, but I left them alone.
whatsthatbug.com is sometimes helpful http://www.whatsthatbug.com/?s=orbwe...archsubmit.y=0 Did you do an image search on google for orbweaver? Sometimes that can narrow it down. |

No, it's more of a spade shape on the lower part of the ody with the pointed end at the rear. It isn't fuzzy like a wolf spider.

the second orb weaver photo you see at this site is similar to the one I have except mine doesn't seem to be so hairy and the distinct brown and white lines on the body are not on the one in the photo. I am beginning to believe I have some sort of Orb Weaver for sure.

I have released him back into the garden near his/her web, I hope it can be rebuilt.

Just make sure it isn't a brown recluse. I have lived around them and they have caused many people around me to loose huge patches of skin, due to their necrotising poisonous bite.

It definitely wasn't a brown recluse but I would like to confirm the type of Orb Weaver it is. I broke half it's web when I ran into it and when I released it back I put it on the basil the web was attached to. I went back out a few mintues ago to find it back in the original center of it's web but with the other half of it gone I am thinking I might find the whole web rebuilt by morning.
