Here's some of my Loranne plants - they are virtually indistinguishable from the Zima's I got from the store.

I'm tossing this back up to the top of the pile because it leaves an impression that Zima was developed... well.... somewhere it was not developed.

Zima was developed by Doug Heath while working at a Monsanto subsidiary. The genetics are primarily from a sweet orange cherry tomato. The only publicly available information about the orange cherry is that one of his predecessors had it with no details on source. Zima is an F1 hybrid of two lines developed from crosses to a grape line where he picked up thicker skin and some disease tolerance. Growing out the seed from Zima gives a range of shapes, colors, and sizes from near round cherries to elongated grapes.

I made a few calls to some people who generally know what is going on in the tomato industry and got a few tantalizing hints that the orange cherry parental line may have been picked up from another breeding program. Zima is clearly an F1 hybrid which indicates that Doug Heath put in quite a bit of breeding work in the development stages.

I'd love to know what the parental very sweet op orange cherry with the thin skin was!

Doug Heath worked at DeRuiter seeds, a Monsanto subsidiary. Doug Heath developed Santorange F1 for Deruiter.
