Default Favorite Hearts

I am thinking about growing all hearts next year. Please share your favorite heart tomato varieties. Any info such as size, color, leaf type would be great.

Thanks

Too many to list...just this: I never met a heart I didn't like.

In this season's garden: Dwarf Speckled Heart, Dwarf Buddy Heart, German Red Strawberry, Brad's Black Heart, Cherokee Purple Heart, Herman's Yellow Heart, Eagle's Beak, Reinhard's Purple Heart. Every year about one third of the varieties I grow are hearts.

The number of different heart varieties grown has now surpassed 100. Way behind some but I am catching up.

Unlike most posters on this thread I find the vast majority of the hearts I have grown to be rather bland and dry compared to a good beefsteak and now only grow a few. Year after year the only heart that sometimes gets in my top ten for taste has been Donskoi. It makes a large fruit and the vine grows fast and large. I sometimes grow Kosovo and Anna Russian for their massive production but not for fresh eating. The only other heart that I think rates as a good eating tomato is Fish Lake Oxheart which like Donskoi has a more balanced and juicy fruit. Wes is also a massive producer down here and if you want to make a lot of sauce it is a good one along with Linnies Oxheart. If you want to grow some massive tomatoes then try Gildo Pietroboni because even though I don't purposely try to grow giant tomatoes I have gotten several in excess of 2 lbs off one plant. I have grown a lot of other hearts but the ones listed above were more productive down here in our extremely hot and humid climate than most of the others.

Aside from being partial to my PL hearts, there are quite a few others I have enjoyed that are also early enough to do well Ludmilla pink heart was the mother of one of my crosses and it’s a great one as is Zena’s gift. Other favourites include mayos delight, strawberry wedge 1884, I also found George Detsikers Italian red did well and tastes great.
EM champion is a very productive determinate.
The only one I ever actually disliked was a woody yellow called petushok.
Plenty of others are great such as orange Russian 117 but way too late to do well in a Canadian garden outdoors.

So far the only heart that has earned a permanent spot in my garden is Russian 117 (the original red one). It's flavor is 100% tomato and works for either sauce or fresh eating.

I am growing Cherokee Purple Heart this year and it is doing well. I like Dwarf Purple Heart. Hungarian from Jeff Caseys place did well and was productive. I love the hearts for sauce or fresh sliced on a sandwich. Anna Russian was a great heart too. It all depends on your taste, your space and your colour preferences I guess. Most of the Italians that I knew in Toronto before I moved didn't grow pastes but grew oxhearts instead for their sauces. Italians tend to know a thing or two about great sauces so you can't go wrong with a good paste tomato!

Best of luck! Pete

I've grown LOTS of hearts maybe several hundreds, heart lover that I am.

I have a list of them in my current databook on a page, but then had to add more on a second page.

So please give me some time to make a list. I don't know how long it might be,of those I like the best and are reliable to do best for me where I am geographically and how I grew my tomatoes such that in different years with different weather they performed well..

I've grown all listed on the TomatoGrowersSupply site, (seed seller).
...I just checked.

Many I continue to grow out every year for maybe 15 yrs. I've yet to have a bland,
hollow fruit from that list. Always perform well in my climate that is similar to
Carolyn's.

In the year 2014 Tormato sent me from MMMM 35 different varieties, all hearts. I chose that best and I grow them this year too:
Orange Russian 117
Mayo´s delight
Kukla´s Portuguese Heart
Ludmila´s Pink heart
Alice
Fresa
Wes
Dester
Brad´s Black Heart
Vladimír
PS.:This year I added Reinhard's Chocolate Heart and Reinhard's Purple Heart from Carolyn's project. Reinhard's Green Heart, unfortunately I did not germinate. Maybe next year I get some interesting green heart.
