Seedling Vigor...

Tom,

I too have two or three plants that are brown in the
stem and appear "rotted" just above the soil line.
I'm keeping a close eye on the Omar's Leb. and 2 BW
Sudduths. I can raise the soil level in their containers
and just might try that as a remedy.

Had a generic Brandywine snap from the wind as it was
out being sunned late last week. Soaked it overnight in
water with a pinch of blue stuff, and replanted it the next day in a soil filled cup. Used an Ice Pick to gently drill a
hole in the soil and inserted the stem. In about three
to four weeks, she'll be ready to plant outdoors....JJ61

I planted my seedlings in the garden Monday and Tuesday. The most prolific, Soldaki and Purple Russian have doubled in size! The others are doing well.

I planted all but two of the KB seeds which resulted in 0 for 23 germination of the seeds. I saw some KB's at a plant sale last weekend and am regretting not getting one. They were only $4 for a nice, big healthy plant.

Hope your others are productive. Can send
you KB seeds in the off season if you wish.
Grew 4 this year, three of which i "farmed-out"
to other gardens.

Over all, most vigorous this spring: Cherokee
Purple, Red Brandywine, Tom's Yellow Wonder,
Hillbilly, and of course, Kellogg's Breakfast....JJ61

I took JJ61 up on his offer for some verifyably fertile KB seeds. I planted only three as soon as they arrived and none came up. All conditions, including the moonsign were favorable but still no KB. I won't be trying anymore this year. I'm looking forward to planting the JJ61 seeds and the 2 leftover Pinetree KB seeds next year to see if it's just a bad year for them here. Very strange.

All of the others I planted are growing well including the now three volunteers. An Aunt Ruby's German Green wilted almost to death about an hour after I weeded around it one morning two weeks ago. I gave it extra care and it came back to life. I think a grub munched on its roots.

Of the 8 plants I gave away, two are next door where I can see them flourishing through the dining room window. Not sure if Altheo's Mom planted the six I gave her yet. She hadn't as of last weekend, but I guess they are still alive.
