I started my first batch of seeds about a month ago, and have been starting different varieties since then. This may seem early, but I have inside fluorescent lights and an outdoor cold frame, so after I pot the seedlings up into larger pots and grow them along for a while under the lights, I put them out in the cold frame - earlier than normal. My plants are never worse for the wear.

I haven't received my tomato seeds I ordered yet, but I just put my sweet pepper seeds in the little peat pods today. Guess I'm running behind compared to everyone else. I probably should have started sooner, but just couldn't get into it until we had a nice 70 degree day a few days ago.

I am in zone 6a, right along the shores of Lake Erie here in PA. I have been starting mine around St. Paddy's Day lately, seems to get them right where I want them before I plant them out in the garden. The lake never froze over this winter, which led to several "lake effect" snows, but may also set us up for an early planting out date this year. Sure hope so! I have a few snow crocus open and they are glorious! Jayne

I am still having germination problems
with 3 varieties.

Tom,
What varieties haven't popped yet?

I'm with Jayne on that St. Pats target date
for the eastern zone 6ers. My plants reach
a height of 10 to 12 inches before I put
them out in early to mid May....JJ61

valereee,
We just a couple of miles away in West Springfield. How cool! No one ever knows where our tiny town is! Which Camp? Judson or Fitch? Isn't it a great area? Hopefully I will have LOTS of tomatoes ready by August!

Jayne, we go to Fitch -- our family has since my mom was a girl. Small world!

We have Family Camp 8/12 - 8/19 this year. I would ADORE to be able to come get some maters, because you cannot even believe how awful the food is at camp. I'm always amazed. There we are smack in the middle of one of the most fertile regions in the entire world, and it's harvest time, and we're eating canned veggies.

Valereee,
We are only a couple of miles from there. You can pop out to Peggy Grey's for chocolates and then head down that same road to our road (last one in PA) and up to our house and grab some maters. My kids have both been to Fitch and said the same thing about their bill of fare.
I am still driving myself crazy trying to figure out how many of which kinds will make the final cut...I will be starting them next week so I am running out of time. Just when I thought I had my list finalized, I did some more trades and now I have way more varieties than I had originally planned. You will have to stuff a bag full and smuggle them in!
Look forward to meeting you!
