Default Smaller container determinates with 2 full sets of fruit

Hi all ,

If you can't have compact container ... "Indeterminate" maybe

"determinate with 2 sets of fruit" would suit your purpose just as well !

I have read yellow pygmy is like that and

Sandpoint ....

Silvery Fir ?

does anyone know of any early determinates that are noted for the

"second fruit set " attribute ? (container friendly ).

Perhaps these are sometimes confused as determinate/semi determinate

due to this early and "second fruit set " ability.

I had a second crop on the Red Dwarf, but that's a microdwarf.

Lots of determinates will start up again after ripening their fruit - but the usefulness depends on having a long season and also, whether the plant is in great condition or showing some wear and tear...

Yes ...I got Red dwarf going as well this year (Thanks a bunch !)

I guess this is possibly a tricky discussion ...

the determinates should be "early " ones that have a chance of displaying a second crop ..in a regular season ........if they are container they can be moved to more protected area ...to finish off and possibly extend season .

I guess some have said you can fool some determinate plants to produce again with a spike of nutes ?

I was suprised at how Yellow pygmy holds in there producing indoors(unheated garage) after outside etc....

I haven't grown it but Adaptive Seeds says this about Cyril's Choice:
50-60 days. Det. Dwarf.

An early dwarf tomato that is also very productive for such small vines. Plans produce several flushes of dark red fruit, yielding later into the season than other determinate types. Fruit are little 2-3 bite saladettes with good sweet flavor. Good for container gardening, at 24” they are a little taller than Gundula.

Hey Nan...I got this one tried it for a few years ....they are very nice ...very nice

Cyril's choice to me partners nicely with Sophie's choice ....LOL

I had it in my cue list again for 2018 ....but I never actually observed
/noticed the "flushes" ....I was just pleased with the compact nature ...

Another one that was good like Cyril's in the compact /rugose

was Kootenai ......also ...Mano was good in this sort of compact kind
(I am confused a bit with Mano some say it is Indeterminate ?)

any way.... it seems one can coax another fruit set out of some compact "determinates" that are more inclined to double set than others ...

Black Bear,

I looked through the list of tomatoes I've researched and found a couple other ones:

Sunoma and Clear Pink Early are supposed to be able to give second flushes.
Also, people say Heidi gives a flush, then a trickle.

Two small varieties with determinate habits but indeterminate yield are Power Pops (a tumbler) and Hardin's Miniature (a micro).

This seems to be the peculiar thing similar to yellow pygmy ..

determinate/indeterminate etc.

Power Pops is 45 DTM, 9" high and 44" wide. It's said to be a heavy producer. It and Hardin's Mini are cherries.

(Hardin's Mini probably wouldn't give you enough to make it worth your while. I have five of them going and they produce roughly as much as a single large plant.)

Yes, I agree it might be a tricky question. And I've never heard of giving more fertilizer to force a 2nd flush of fruits, but I think that depends on where a person grows tomatoes, meaning how long the season is.

Yes,most det are early and some keep putting out fruits later, for me it all depends on the weather. Ones that keep going, for me, include Stupice, Matina, Kimberly, Glacier and Tamina.

I think it best for me just to comment on the ones that I know very well.

Sandpoint, taste I hate. Bred by Dr.Boe in Idaho and there are 4 other similar ones

Silvery Fir Tree, pretty foliage but taste too aggressive for me

Clear Pink Early,why not try it,does OK for me,but not much more and have never seen 2 flushes of fruits. Another one from Russia;

Heidi, I'll link to Tania on this one since there are varying opinions.

Thanks for the update .....I kind of feel a line is crossed for me where

Tiny Tim and venus and red robin etc. are a good size to be ok.

but things like Micro Tom are nice and "ornamental " to look at

but almost "academic" .........I like Ornamental ...but also would like

production as well. (Mini versus Micro ...etc. )

For me Kimberly produces earlier and all season ...but not as much as

Matina/Tamina which is later ...but for me a heavier crop produced...

They work well as Partners.

Glacier seems to me to peter out after the first flush ..

another one like these mentioned is Bloody Butcher ....which seems to me always has larger fruit than the others ..but not as consistent outcome ...as a container grown variety.

Matina /Tamina is my overall favourite of that grouping when container growing ..

Carolyn which varieties do you mean ...when refer to 4 other similar ones to sandpoint ?

I am keen to try out some hopeful "spitters" even if they produce under

difficult environment .

Great! You've got another one!

I placed the following in the wrong thread, so I'm re-posting it here:

I just came across a post where someone says Lucky Leprechaun gave them multiple flushes:

SFT was my earliest and very productive variety this season. I think I got first ripe tomato from them on April 30th. I had sowed the seeds on Jan 19th. Thatis like 105 days from seed or equivalent of 65 days from plant out.
I got probably over 100 tomatoes from 2 plants, each in a 4 gallon fabric bag.
It was too much work to keep it going in the heat of south for second flush. Had to water them twice a day. So I pulled them. By then I was getting bumper crop from other varieties.
