Every Parade Gets Some Rain
August 5, 2014
Today, 75 days after planting in the ground, I picked the first "PF" (Pineapple Female) tomato - a 1 pound 3 ounce specimen that appeared to be simultaneously over-ripe at the bottom 100_1943-001.jpg and under-ripe at the top. 100_1944-001.jpg After dissection to remove the core and cat-facing the tomato yielded about eight ounces of edible flesh. 100_1951-001.jpg But, it still retained some of the under-ripe material. To my taste this plant has produced fruit that is so bland as to be disqualified from further consideration. I will continue to report on it, but I won't be growing it again unless later examples of fruit develop a lot more flavor. "CHP.F" (Cherokee Purple Female) is growing well but has no ripe fruit yet. Too bad.
If you had not said the top wasn't ripe, I'd have guessed that the yellow top was related to the Pineapple genes. |

There's another large fruit that should be ripening in about a week. Maybe it will be better than this fruit was.

Sorry for my lack of updates in July, it turned out to be a lot more busy than I had previously expected.
First late June / July I had experienced some issues with downy mildew. 90 percent of my squash plants were affected 80% keeled over.some toms were also cross contaminated, At first I treated with Serenade, with minimal success, later I treated with an aspirin solution. what ever was going to die died everything else is now doing very well. I might treat again just to catch any peripheral infections. Observation: I had one Cp F sprawling out everywhere to the point where it has been in direct contact with the diseased squash, as per my observation on Sunday morning, There's plant has yet to show signs of infection, which can infer that there might be some partial disease resistance. Secondly I had one plant turn out to be much like the large saladette that Crmauch came across. pics on that later. As for the CHPF the plant is large, sprawling and the fruit are probably in the range of 1 lb. Fruiting has been relatively sparse and the max so far is 3 per truss they were planted late so there has yet to be any ripe fruit as of yet, but I'll update when that time comes. Gaston |

Thanks for the update Dinca. Sorry to hear
about your issues with mildew. Well here's a couple of Pineapple X CHP fruit ready for the dinner plate.. Still no ripe fruit on the CHPX Pineapple. The fruit is guite ripe yet still firm. I'm sorry to say that this fruit is bland as well. Not the fruity taste of last year. It's not mushy, nor does it taste bad, it simply is neither acidic, sweet, fruity, or salty. Let's hope for better results from everyone else who is on board. Well looks like the saladettes aren't a mishap. I am really interested in them now. Crmauch said they had a tomatoey flavor. That is my favorite type of saladette or cherry tomato. I don't enjoy the sweet cherries at all. How productive are those saladettes Dinca and Crmauch? As of now, none are ripe.
I did have a very bland 1 pound 3 ounce PF, but it was epsilon who had the mildew. |

Yeah just like last year, the days to maturity seem to be in line with male of the cross. The plants that are from cherokee purple pollen are right in sink with my Cherokee Purple plants. I don't have any Pineapple plants this year but they are usually 2 weeks later than CP.

Yup I was the one with the Mildew, The aspirin cleared it up pretty nicely. And the plants next to those infected with mildew are doing well. To clarify the Chp x Pine is doing fine and uninfected.
There was some plants that had cruddy growth habits so I culled them immediately. Also I too had some sort of saladette, though it wasn't spectacular at all. Actually it was along the lines of a market tomato in flavor. |
