Default Root growth

Hi all,

Just happened upon an ad for these and wondered if anyone has had an opportunity to use them. They are a little pricy for me (make that a lot) but I guess I am interested more in the concept. Is it that beneficial to encourage root growth that continues straight down? And if so, how important. I know I have seen another manufacturer that produced a similar product.

On a tree with a tap root I think it's very important. On a tomato I don't think it's important at all and those look like a tomato would out grow them very quickly.
