Default Thick skin

I have been growing tomatoes at home, in Sweden a couple of years now, and no matter where or how I grow them, or what kind, the skin alway get much thicker on my tomatoes than on the tomatoes I buy. Does anybody know why?

Welcome, Swedish Farmer, on Tomatoville! Perhaps you can tell us which varieties you have grown; some are thicker skinned than others. Did you already try "Schlesische Himbeere"? It has (normally) a very thin skin.

For me here in Germany it's quite the opposite: Tomatoes bought in a store have always a thicker skin and that is due to the transportation (mostly from Spain or the Netherlands); people wouldn't buy cracked fruits. clara

My favorite tomatoes are those whose skins are so thin you dont have to peel them to make red sauce, just give them a quick pop in the blender and they evaporate.

If you want thin skin, try some of the heart shaped tomotoes. Those are usually thin skinned. Also growing conditions will affect skin, like low amount of water or a long period to get ripe.

Thank you for your replies! I have tried most kinds already, and they all turn out the same. Clara - the Schlesische Himbeere I cant find, maybe it goes under another name in Scandinavia. And Darwinslair - I also like them just like that! =) My problem most likely has to do with the conditions, like you say Zipcode. Maybe I should give them less water and change the temperature somehow...

I have found Kosovo to have a thin skin, especially early in the season. Eva Purple Ball has fairly thin skin. Of the large beefsteaks I have grown Sudduth's and Stump of the World seem to be the thinnest skinned. I have no way of measuring so I am just going by how nicely a sharp knife slices through the skin.
