Thanks Luigiwu. I had not heard of it and now saw bunch of you tube videos. It may be easier (and cheaper) to build than what I have in mind. Though it will not look good as deck window box

I am hoping to figure out a way to incorporate that into my other containers.

Did you see the one where a guy names ChrisF made one out of a square post? and it uses pop bottles? Its quite sleek. Either way, I was suggesting the "guts" of it to be RGGS and then you can build a nice surround using cedar to hide the trough/pop bottles. Its somethign I want to do as well but haven't found the time. You can also use those plastic windowboxes and have that sit over the water trough and then build a nice cedar surround if you want more soil depth and stuff.

RGGS is fabulous. Its the only way I can garden. I'll try and find a link for you. We have a group on facebook too - join us!

Thanks LuigiWu. That's a great idea. Run rain gutter for water at the bottom and use "off the shelf" plastic windowboxes on top. I can live with the look of that without further dressing those up. (And I already have 4 of those plastic window boxes) You have probably read about raybo's earthtainer. That is what I have been using and because of it, my gardening has been amazing success (compared to what other gardeners around me do, not compared to TVille stalwarts)

Thanks for those links. That is another great idea that I can use.

I love container gardening! Glad to help.

one last link: this guy lives in a historic district, so he built a wood surround to hide the guts of the system (buckets etc.)

They work by means of friction. kind of... They're probably inserted into the ground which should more or less stabilize each corner, then the boards are inserted which act kind of like a sway bar on a cars suspension which keep the sides aligned making the box almost completely stable. finally the soil put into the box pushes the boards into the corners of the slots causing friction and making it immobile.

So Unless you consciously try to move the box or the soil that the slots are sitting in undergoes liquefaction it remains where you put it until you're ready to move it.
