Just noticed my sign says 9-26...that's the date that I took them with film camera while they were very green. The digital pic that is posted was taken Oct. 7, 06. I think it's is later because I wasn't able to get the plant back to Ohio until end of June for planting. Both the Slicers and Sweetmeat was planted late and covered each time we had threat of frost! Patty,

Is it pink or red? Also, one of the fruits looks like heart-shaped...

Can you tell us more about the history/origin? I know you mentioned it is from an Amish plant, but when and where did you buy it?

Tania, I might sound as if I am hedging on my answer, but just not sure how to answer! Color....not pink but not bright red either...so pinkish red?? Most of the large tomatoes from Sweetmeat have a flattened bottom but some are rounded. None that come to a point like the Yellow or Pink Slicers.

As for the history, I really do not know that and have mentioned both Sweetmeat and the Slicers hoping to find someone else who could supply additional info. Both are mentioned at Seeds of Diversity.
But little information given.

My parents in West Virginia were not seed savers other than maintaining their heirloom bean seed. So when it comes time to get garden plants, they make the greenhouse run. There are several small family run places that raise and sell their own plants and some of these are Amish families. The Sweetmeat and the Pink and Yellow Slicers both came from one of these Amish growers. This year, my Mom purchased the plants at Hidden Valley, Marsdale, Pa....which is a few miles from Grantsville, MD. My parents live in the corner of West Virginia where Maryland, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia all come together.

I haven't found much mention of these varieties elsewhere but I would say they are well known in that part of the country. And thanks to my Mom, I was able to get plants from the main source, bring them back to Ohio, and save a few seeds from each this summer.

Hope this answers a few questions and maybe you can list them in SSE next year or better yet, find their missing background. Patty
