The Garden of Woz in the land of OZ

I have two MS plants growing at the moment, one in straight coastal grey sand and the other in a blended soil. The blended soil is a grey coastal sand pulverised wood mix, not sure if sand was from the same source or not. Blend was done by supplier in an attempt to prevent the sand from compacting. I need to add a lot more nitrogen to the blend. Seed was self saved from one tomato last year.

While up at the parents for Christmas day, we had a feathered visitor, who made the kids day.

Had to drop the kids at the parents again a few days later and this time he brought a friend.

Not sure why the first photo rotated, but it is a male that is believed to have established a birthday of a circuit where he gets fed. The second photo if of the same male plus a young bird.

The male is very quiet for a wild bird, the younger bird is a bit more timid. Male came down to eat as our oldest was putting seed on plate. Birds are totally wild and kids are fascinated by them, just need to keep the kids back a bit from the birds. Helmets are because they were on their scooters when the birds arrived

Have been growing several members of this family for two or three years now, initially Turmeric which has flowered twice. Will post a flower photo when I can track one down. Shooting rhizomes first followed by foliage. All of these have frost sensitive foliage with the leaf cardamom not having a rhizome, unlike the others

Also obtained at the same time was leaf cardamom, the same flavour as normal cardamom but you use the leaf instead of the seed

March last year saw us pick up a Galangal plant, a stronger flavoured ginger, not as frost sensitive but still needs protection

The most recent addition was a number of Ginger rhizomes from the local green grocers. They are just starting to shoot. All of these are growing in a general purpose potting mix.

One that I saved seed from on our travels to South Australia earlier in the year. No idea as to real identity. Relatively small and open plant.

Very nice to see photos of the parrots and I’m amazed the kids were able to get that close.

I planted galangal about a year ago. It grew well but never flowered, and now we’re heading into our cool season so I expect it won’t do much until it warms back up. How often do you harvest your gingers?

Lucky duck! You are the luckiest of all possible ducks, to have wild parrots in your yard! That's awesome! (can you tell I'm a parrot lover?)

The male parrot was even closer to the kids at one stage, coming in to land about a foot from the plate while the kids were still putting the seed in. We had them pull back a bit as they do get excited, safer for all.

We harvest the gingers when they die down, except for the leaf cardamom which can be picked at any time of the year.

Will look back through my photos and find a few more of our animals and Parrots for you folks
Should be able to track down the one of our young fellow pulling a devils tail, taken I'm Tasmania 7 or 8 years ago. Heading back to Tasmania in a couple of months and will head back to that same Park as young girl wants to pull the tail of one too!

Nan we have 4 Parrots locally, but the others are not as quite as the Kings. Shall endeavour to get photos

After the late planting of my tomatoes, they are starting to produce enough that we should not have to buy anymore for a while. Mainly cherries with one grub nibbled Black Krimm and these two beauties. Have not grown GMG before, but will be growing it again for sure
