First Biyskaya Roza and Grandfather Ashlock.
Biyskaya Roza 9.5 out of 10; taste like black tomato does. Grandfather Ashlock 8.5 out of 10; even better with salt.

Thank you, ladies.
Picked some red currents today (2.6 pounds). My mom usually processes it to get rid of skin and pits and adds sugar (1/1 portion). She refrigerates it afterwords. It is great source of vitamin C. It can be used to make refreshing drink, pour over ice cream, soak cake crust, and drip over french toast.

Ella, those Biskaya Rosa's are on my fall growlist. Thank you for the photos and descriptions, and also for the seeds!
I have been loving the lily photos too. Just gorgeous. So is that bowl full of currants. |

Yes it is. Red currants can be grow in NJ. Black currants are restricted. It is possible but with permit and inspections and ... so, too much headache. I love both. We do purchase once in a while on Brighton Beach some black currant preserves. We make tea with it. I grew up eating both at my grandma garden.

Just curious: Why is growing black currants restricted in your area? Disease issues..?
Here in Finland, they are one of the most common garden berry species, along with red, white and green currants. |

Is is blamed for spreading blister rust on to the pine trees. Was banned for 100 years or so. Recently ban was overturned in some states. You can grow it in NY.
For my taste black currents are reacher than blueberries. If or when it would be allowed to grow in NJ without all the inspections (first you need to approve the side you plant them, then every year it has to be inspected and planted for 10 years only, afterwords has to be removed), I would definitely have few bushes.

My grandma used to say "whole life leave whole life learn".
I discovered so many aphids eggs under okra leaves, I was panicking. There were ants all over them. Ok, my thoughts were, they are harvesting these eggs and will help cleaning my okra without me using any spray (soap). Unfortunately it was not the case, just the opposite. I did a little research. Ants may be the reason I have more aphids. Two of my heart tomatoes had them earlier in the season. I got rid of them. They came back in 2 different locations far away from each other and lots of the aphids. I do not like ants anymore. They can cause problems. http://insects.about.com/od/coolandu...sandaphids.htm

So sorry to hear that! I hate aphids - and hope they won't take over this year.
Ants are a real pain sometimes, nearly impossible to get rid of. There are a couple of them running around on my balcony - they probably came with the chives I brought from my mom's garden. I have heard that cinnamon is really good to drive them away, also aspartame (a strong neurotoxin... not healthy for humans either, although it is approved my government agencies) |

Those currents are beautiful, Ella. I can imagine so many fun things to do with them in the kitchen! Is it a large plant? Not that I need ANOTHER thing to add to my garden...

In my garden it is as big as raspberry. The only thing is that raspberry is invasive, it spreads like weed. Currents do not, they are bushy.
