The patch isn't 100% weed free, but it's a far cry from last year.
Another note, if you look at the 2 little fruit I took pictures of, you will notice they are oval shaped. That's the best shape for GP's. If they are do-nut shaped, they could roll over the vine and snap off, if the are round that's better, but oval is the best, they tend to lay flat. The 1081, and 1024 are at 11' the 1112 is it 10' |

I love the board shoe idea. I may just have to make a pair for myself!

Version will be made from plywood with rounded corners. You have to walk with your wide with these. I used 1X10's and they will split, that's why I have the boards at the end, I didn't measure i just used some scrap I had handy, and the left shoe is bigger then the right.
I used screws to attach them, I found it's better to only attach the toes and the ball of the shoe to the board, it makes it easier to walk. |

Meant to add and forgot....
I found out our area has a giant pumpkin club. They have seed auctions and the whole bit. Who knew?!? We live about an hour from the Circleville Pumpkin Festival held every fall. A really fun festival to go to! http://www.pumpkinshow.com/

I removed 3 tiny fruit from my #2 plant tonight, it's still just a bit early to set fruit.

Amiga - would snowshoes work instead of the boards? They would be easier to get into and out of...

Amigatec,
Did I understand you correctly? You haven't allowed any fruit set yet? if this is so when will you allow fruit set and how many times will you bury the vines. I understood that you also bury the end of the vines 10' after fruit set to stop evaporation. neva |

The best place to set fruit is 10' to 12' on the main, but some growers wait until 15'. Also the shape make a difference. I'll keep burying vines until sometime after pollination. At that time I will stop and cut the tap roots from the fruit unto the end of the vine off to allow the fruit to grow. I will have to add an "S" curve to the main to allow for growth. |

I like the wooden shoes. I would be tempted to cut toes into them and call the neighbors over and claim a Bigfoot sighting. You could also go with compact snowshoes that would be quite the garden fashion.
