Charley, I saw sets still at the local Walmart Thursday.

I also plant onion bulbs as companion plants for tomatoes. I think they cost $1.88 for around 50. They only get to 2-3" size is all though. It isn't exactly this, but it's close http://www.walmart.com/ip/Dutch-Vall...nt-25/20927748

Salt those dont tell you anything about what kind they are or whether they are long day or short day onions.
They have already been dormant once so that means they will more than likely go to seed the first year.
I have never seen them not got to seed the first year.

The package says White or Yellow, or Red, or Sweet - nothing more.

The instructions are basically - put onion in hole - cover.

I know this is basically what I am doing with the shallots I bought at the store.

I want them to go to seed as I know they should because they have been dormant and the tops have died back once.

I also figured out a way I can grow a monster onion here with a long day variety.
I am going to try it.
This is after watching another dixondale video.
He said they on mistake planted some long day onions here and they just kept putting on more and more leaves because the daylight hours never got long enough for them to bulb.

This video explains it all.
https://youtu.be/3FpOkDWzbNg

What I plan on doing is trying to get 20 or more leaves and then putting a flood light on them to get more day light hours to force bulbing.
This way I will have a monster onion and maybe break a record.

I can grow sets in to nice onions here, though they are best for green onions. The trick is take advantage of the early season with plenty of nutrients and moisture before they put all of their energy into the flower stalk.

It might be because you live in the middle zone.
I have seen them get to about 2 inches max before they flower most of the time around one inch.

It is, but they will do the same thing here without care.

Many of my onions are going on there 6th or 7th leaf if you count the dead one off to the side.
Most all are at 5.
This is so stressful but fun.

Worth, I enjoy reading how enthused you are on growing your onions really large. I hope you get record size ones. I think all the research you've been doing is admirable and this is one of the first threads I look for each day. When you post an onion video - I watch it

Me - our onions - I look at them and think....yep, those are onions - I could thin a few out and plant some tomatoes in with them. But then again, I do plant around 300 onions.

Salt I might have 600 onions growing is various places.

Someone asked me what I was going to do with all of them and I said eat them.
They said there is no way you can eat 600 onions.
I eat an onion every day one way or another.

I have a life long buddy of mine that is the same way both of us will stop cooking and go to the store for hot peppers, onions and garlic.
We are both the same age and in great health.

Peppers! ....
The wind is really strong out now 30mph. I had to go save some.

Yesterday I potted up some Filus Blue, Riot, and Royal Black peppers. 9 year old seeds.
