May update
-Thrips are under control for the most part. Combo of yellow flowered "pull" plants and deltamethrin seems to have done the trick. The local population of Frankliniella occidentalis plaguing my garden is resistant to diazinone. Monitoring progress with sticky traps in yellow and blue, fingers crossed I'm over the hump.
-Next week I'll return to my usual Neem/food grade DE and Copper. -Mammoth Microbials (samples)and Harpin proteins are contributing, as is Sea Green Foliar (I really dig this stuff). -Compost-alfalfa tea brewing as I type this and will be twice a week for the next couple of months. -Planted 6 types of marigolds, Pincushion-Sweet Scabious, and lots of Alyssum. These will be my ongoing "pull" plants, they'll live right under the citrus trees and at the end of the tube runs. -Chem-Gro/cal nitrate/mag-sulfate is easy. Some plants really like it, others turn purple and cry. We'll keep the ones that say "more please." Here are the replacements for the felled plants: Overall views. The runs in the opposite direction have a trellis set up to receive the cukes (Excelsior, Sweet Success, Super Zagross, Neva Bride, Calypso, Lemon, Delikatesse). The 2nd pic you can see some of the youngins. reset.jpg reset2.jpg Elgin Pink elgin pinks2.jpg elgin pinks.jpg Delicious Larisa Vorlon delicious larisa vorlons.jpg Cowlick's and Polish Linguisa cowlicks and polish linguisas.jpg Cowlick's and Larisa cowlicks and larisas.jpg Kiss the Sky and Dora kiss the sky and dora.jpg Larisa and Cascade Lava larisas and cascade lavas.jpg Larisa larisas.jpg Grandma Oliver's Chocolate larry johnsons olivers choc.jpg Terhune and Odoriko terhune and odori.jpg TN Heirloom and Dester tn heirl and dester.jpg Koroleva and Pink Rafaello koroleva and pink rafaello.jpg korolevas.jpg Current "pull" plants for thrips trap plants for thrips.jpg Fred's TD, one of my favorites freds td.jpg Last edited by Gerardo; May 8, 2017 at 11:27 PM. |

Snap dragon flowers are one of my sons fave.
Excellent work, Gerardo. Keep these pictures coming. I am probably 2 weeks from planting out. Weather here is just not cooperating this year.

Geraldo, are all your plants in containers? Interesting, those containers that look
like little laundry baskets can support 2 tomato plants. Is this garden in Tijuana or San Diego? Sorry for all the questions, haven't read the whole thread. We used to go to Tijuana and Ensenada back in the day (80's). I grew up in Whittier, CA |

If I worked as hard as Gerardo in that climate I'd sweat 5 gallons a day....if I could do it.

Those towns you remember from the 80s are long gone, replaced by a large sprawling beast. Ensenada has grown a lot, fortunately it has room to spread its legs. Here's a little trivia fact: the largest municipality by area in the Americas is Ensenada. It covers over 50,000 km2!!!!!!!! Over 70% of Baja California Norte belongs to Ensenada. Quote:
Lots of sunblock, and mostly working in the evenings helps a lot. I'm sure my neighbor's are tired of hearing me pump my 2 gallon sprayer around 11 pm. |

Gerardo you are the reason I am revisiting growing in containers but with a different approach.
I hope it works for me. Most of the time I just look and keep my mouth shut on your threads. No way can I afford the Earth Boxes and so on. Worth |

Containers are the future, and fabric pots are the path, for hot weather growing. They can be economically fashioned from weed barrier fabric, or to buy, run about $4 for 15gal and $3 for 10gal.

Looks great.
Don't let the probe dry out on your handheld meter. They are meant to stay moist all the time. Some brands put a sponge in the cap. Others sell a storage solution. It just has to stay wet. Water is probably fine. Frequent calibration of the meter is the other necessity, especially for ph. If you do the same thing as always, and suddenly the ph is off, check the meter first. |

Thanks for the tip.
Lizard free, dogs are diligent. Flowers as bait in the attached pic. Found BRANDY BOY F1 at Lowe's. Game on. Driving down to Ensenada on the Cal Nitrate hunt. |
