if that is an RMD you better not fail to take it each year or not only will you be forced to but the penalty will be 50% of the RMD! YIKES that could be a lot!

God always provides for good people who take great joy in the talents he gave us all and also with the safe keeping of the world agricultural responsibilities you have shared with all of us. I was just thinking this morning how much I have learned from you and others over the years. Especially, helping many people who have received “pure joy to eat the foods they grew-up with” because of Great People like you and all other's pioneers of preserving our food history. I give you the credit for my successful year of sell-out before I even got the chance to advertise. I sold out of Heirloom Tomatoes and heirloom vegetables for the first time. For some heirloom Varieties of squashes I had to grow a second crop “which is going well” just for the seeds. Please let me know if I can do anything for you. It’s time for me to get back to work. I just want to thank you.

Carolyn, I hope the knee can be fixed without any surgery!

Knees are terribly sensitive to any blow and to all kinds of stress, but if not broken sometimes they can be mended with TLC: rest, hydrotherapy with cold or heat depending on the condition, and specific exercise prescribed by a physiotherapist.

I have never been to a physio myself, but have seen my mom work through several very disabling conditions by following the exercises she was given. A lot of effort but of course, well worth it, as it eventually put an end to the pain and disability.

Tom, yes, it is a required minimum distribution ( RMD), but thankfully I'm all set for this calendar year . As you know it kicks in at age 70 1/2 and honestly I wasn't aware of that but every month I have several hundreds of dollars transferred to my "larger" bank account, forwarded to them by my retirement acct and that covered it.

One cannot live on SS alone, at least I can't what with all the school and property taxes, etc, but no mortgage payment since I paid cash for this lovely place and 30 acres..

Problem is that money from two different sources where I taught were being deposited and the programs of each were different in terms of disbursments.

A few weeks ago I had to take out a large amount of money to start paying off the home equity loan I'd taken to build the new garage, and kinda, well, maxed out that on new well pump, new roof, you get the picture.

My retirement place is TIAA/CREF, originally available only to college and University teachers , etc, but some funds are now open to the public.

I made contact with a rep in Denver called Mike who was wonderful and got that large amt transferred in just a few hours, then came the subject of the MDR and he had papers sent to me from NC where the home office is, well, I think the HO is actually in NYC and said to call him when I got them.

I did, and again we spent a lot of time on the phone. Only he could help b'c I had no idea where the monies were from both places.

So he checked and said I was OK for this year as I have been since I turned 70. Sigh. So now I have to fill out those papers and send them in so they can do the calculations for next year and it was Mike who advised me to do so.

If I'd goofed you would have visited me in jail, wouldn't you?

It was a delight talking with Mike b'c he's a K stone person himself and his son is aiming for the U of CO Med School where I taught and his office is across from the Brown Palace Hotel, which I knew well.

So the $$$ situation is OK, and I never knew the penalty would be that large.

Trust me, there won't BE any surgery. I've had it with that and I'd still have to use a walker anyway.

Next week Howard picks me up for that visit to the local doc and when we get back to my home I'm going to call and see if I can get an appt with my ortho surgeon, mainly for the hip rechecks but also to ask about the knee. Having Howard here with his appt book is necessary when i call.

The PT person thought it was either osteo arthrits OR tendinitis. And the county nurse and the home health aide both suggested frozen pea applications.

So we shall see.

Joyce, thanks for the very kind words and I know you meant them for so many other persons who post here and try to help others as well.

not only would i visit you i'd bring you a tomato... with a small hack saw blade inside!

rmds are required the year after you turn 70 1/2. i'm not there yet but depending how you do this you may have to take TWO the 1st time ie in the same year, one for last and one for this. i think it has to delaying it to the next year, it's cloudy now but be certain you comply cuz that penalty is wicked. be sure your financial consultant is aware of all deferred accounts (401k, 403b, probably 457?) cuz iirc you have to take the rmd from EVERY one you can't take it all from just one if you have more than one of these deferred accounts.

it's complicated and i'm not giving advise as much as alerting you to be sure you comply and that he really knows what to do... or else!

Does Horse gram help in eliminating Kidney Stones?

Kidney stones are a painful condition and caused due to deposits of Oxalates. Taking a diet with low amounts of calcium and phosphorus is recommended if you have kidney stones. Horse gram is recommended for treating kidney stones in India. Soak about 4 teaspoons of Horse gram in approximately 1.5 cups of water overnight and drink the water in the water on an empty stomach the next morning. You can add the same amount of water to the horse gram again and let it soak and can drink the water in the afternoon and repeat this and drink in the evening as well. Taking horse gram water this way for 2-3 months will help in completely eliminating the kidney stones. The horse gram water has diuretic properties and dissolves the kidney stones. Diuretics increase the elimination of water from the body.

I'm not avoiding you, I've just had a lot to deal with this week and have had other priorities, but I'll get back to you when I can.

Just noting that there are four kinds of K stones of different compositions, but yes. the Calcium Oxalate ones are the most common and the ones, to date, that I've had. Reports not yet back on the latest K stone encounter but usually a person with repeated K stones forms the same kind.

I just read through this whole thread and found some stuff that I'd forgotten and did so b'c about 30 min ago I got one of those robotic calls from the office of my ortho surgeon and I've known Richard since 2004 and I want him to explain to me what septic schock is all about so I can' better understand why I remembered so little.

I'm there for followup X-rays for both faux hips and also wanted to ask him about the right knee.

Since I was at the computer when the call came I couldn't punch 1 or 2 to confirm or cancel my appt since I answered with my communicator box, so that means I have to call Monday to confirm.

Howard will again be driving me, but not that far since Glens Falls Hospital has many local places and this one is in Greenwich, actually built quite recently and only abut a 25 min drive. Richard appears once every two weeks as do several other specialists.

I'm going to forget the dentist and mammogram followups until next year, I've had enough , hoping I don't get in trouble with the dentist during the winter. But I last saw my ortho person 3 years ago so that comes first.

Got the Medicare statement for the August 29th surgery and September 9th removal of the stent and went into schock again. I have to laugh about it, I really do since my ortho surgeon told me that every doc knows exactly what Medicare pays, so why they bill triple and upwards I haven't a clue.
