Bountiful Gardens sells the "Widger" which is designed for handling small seedlings.

I have access to chemical spatulas etc but for pulling plugs out of cell trays I get a cheap metal salad fork out of the kitchen drawer. When I was working with/dividing large potted plants with tough rootballs on a regular basis nothing was better than the cheap finely serrated steak knives or the next size up (small kitchen knife version). They would saw through just about anything. I don't know if I would want something as flexible as that $14 transplant knife.

cool and the price at $5 is better than $15 - my hands drop pencils too easily and this looks like a little more to grip - thanks Denis

I use a plastic spoon on my seedlings. I find it works well and if I lose it oh well get another out of the packet.
