Like Mcsee, we are in Gippsland as well and there is a definite lack of bees about for pollination duties, to the point where I will probably get a hive within the next year or two. This is simply down to there not being many hives located around here rather than any disease issues. We have lost bee keepers across the country in general due to the import of cheap Chinese "honey", a lot of which is apparently adulterated with rice syrup. The Chinese export 140,00 tonnes of "honey" but do not have the bee population to produce this much.

We’re on the northern tablelands of New South Wales and the honey bee population is healthy here. We have a Warré hive on the place though we’re just hosting it for a friend who lives in town. There are ample numbers of native pollinators around so the honey bee is surplus to requirements, at least around us.

Pricked out 160 little seedlings yesterday. Of those sown, 4 are currently no-shows though I haven’t given up on them yet as the seed was pretty old. I’ll get some pics over the weekend.

I’ve added Jade Beauty to the list. One of the 4 no-shows came up yesterday. Hope springs eternal!

Planted out 101 tomato seedlings today. This year we are growing them 30cm (~1ft) apart and pruning them to a single cordon/leader. All those planted out are indeterminates. The remainder will be planted out early next week.

Is 30 cm the typical spacing you use? I’m at 45 cm for my single stem but disease is worse here so it helps to have more air flow through.
Our first freeze in Virginia so I’m living off the Southern Hemisphere blogs for my tomato fixes! |
