My experience with JTB was fairly ho-hum; I grew it out in the year I had so many black fruited varieties in the garden. Potato leaf foliage, small to medium uniquely shaped (more of a true pear - as in the fruit pear - than any others I grew. Was a red/black, or brown fruited variety with fair to good flavor, and it did not handle my conditions well - met an early demise to disease. Pics of unripe and ripe fruit attached.

The shape looks pretty cool Craig.
In my area, PL's handle disease a lot better than the RL's. Also we're growing the "mystery black" (RL) and Black Pear (PL) - I'll be able to see how all of these compare - ~ Tom ps. finding sprouts this morning from my 3/15 sowing, I found a Black Pear emerge.
