Still finalizing my list for 2016, luckily I have some cold days ahead to do little else.
2015 was a mess in my garden. St Louis had a serious streak of unstoppable rain which ultimately stopped my plants right in their tracks. I had early blight, late blight, red blight, blue blight, assaulting aphids like a scene from starship troopers, and tomato ebola. Varieties in bold are returning. Extra props goes to my homie Captain Lucky. A tasty performer that lives up to hype. Amazon Chocolate Captain Lucky Cowlick's Brandywine Fishlake Oxheart Girl Girl's Weird Thing Indian Stripe PL Indigo Cherry Drops Iva's Red Berry Prue Sun Gold F1 Wes And here's the list of varieties I'm on the fence about. If anyone happens to feel inclined to give a glowing endorsement of any of them, I would be grateful. I grow for taste (sweet and interesting), production, and resilience in that order. Ambrosia UBX Barlow Jap Bear Creek Daniel Burson Elgin Pink Eva Purple Ball Marizol Gold Mayo's Delight Orange Russian 117 Rebel Yell |

I'm not far from St Louis. I know what you mean about 2015's weather.
Orange Russian 117 is a big hit with many people on this site. I like it a lot myself. |

I grew Barlow Jap for the first time last year. Production was good, but not great. The flavor earned it a spot for 2016.

Love, love Elgin Pink, Mayo's Delight, and Rebel Yell. Based on conversations here, I am trying Orange Russian 117.

I've grown all of them at least once. Ambrosia split on me too much. Barlow Jap is one I can't let go and keep growing year after year of because I love its taste and beauty. Daniel Burson is more splitty and cat-facey than I like but its taste is divine and I still grow it because my neighbor can't live without it. Elgin Pink can be AMAZING so it'll be back for year 3. Orange Russian 117 was a fave of 2 neighbors and is an excellent variety but I don't grow it anymore because we don't seem to eat the orange/yellow ones much; beautiful, large, productive, and tasty. Rebel Yell is definitely worth growing again- this will be year #2 for me. It has more 'pow' than Barlow Jap, but not too much for my taste buds. The others just didn't make the cut in their category because we found others we like better.

I've noticed that NAR is misplaced, but when I try to edit, I get a blank page?

Steve, thanks for the effort.
I am going to grow four of your top 10 favorites in 2016. All together I will be growing 7 on that list with a rating of 4 or better. I feel good about that. I believe in peers' polling. I will not grow any variety , unless it is well reviewed and liked by home gardeners (not the seed companies ). Gardeneer |

Glowing endorsements, OK, glowing then and why, and have grown all of them all except for Barlow Jap.
Ambrosia UBX, no glow Barlow Jap,haven't grown Bear Creek, semiglow Daniel Burson, outstanding glow Elgin Pink, sub glow Eva Purple Ball, outstanding glow Marizol Gold, outstanding glow b/c it was one of the only three heirloom varieties that Joe Bratka's parents brought from Germany and all three are brightly glowing for me, and that's Marizol Gold,Marizol Purple and Eva Purple Ball, Joe fudged on the other ones he called heirlooms, but they were one he bred. Mayo's Delight,no glow Orange Russian 117, in a good year a glow Rebel Yell, glowing Based on taste first, which is why I grow tomatoes, production next, no disease tolerances noted b'c they differ where a person grows as to state, county, country and specific season, etc. Carolyn

Carolyn,
I just checked my seed stash to see if I had Marizol Gold. I didn't, but found Marizol Bratka (dark pink). Does that one "glow" for you? Linda |

http://tatianastomatobase.com/wiki/M...b=General_Info Joe used to send out a list of his offerings. When I saw Purple Brandywine on the list I said WHAT. It was not an heirloom it was one he bred, so I suggested to him that he call it Marizol Bratka, he agreed, but had already sent out seeds as Purple Brandywine which is why it's one confused mess and so many different names have been used for it. I see it in the 2015 SSE YEarbook as both Marizol Bratka and Purple Brandy, I suppose it does glow since all in the SSE Yearbook liked it very much. At the timeI was so ticked off at Joe misrepresenting varieties that I think I grew it only once, and I dids see some in the SSE YEarbook who got Marizol Bratka from me, but not Purple Brandy, Marizol Gold is a very different variety being a large gold/red bicolor with the greenish gray foliage that is distinctive of the Marizols,I mean the real ones. Thanks very much Carolyn. I don't think it will glow for me because (Purple Brandy) is large and late.
I have more than enough varieties to chose from Linda |
