I first thought this was a typo for 'peppers'. But then realized the dealio for WTSHTF.
And you are hilarious Worth... "I told them I was going to be a cannibal now start eating that rice, and poked them in their fat little bellies." I've stumbled upon some of the 'prepper' forums...an interesting bunch. Pretty much have hashed out every scenario and rather matter of fact strange. Yet informative. We don't fit the category but well prepared having been through many disasters. Could probably survive a lifetime unless ambushed by the non-prepared. Takes an ounce of imagination to visualize what to do. Prepared for storms and that list is long but easily filled in 1/2 a day. Irene, Igor, storm Sandy, 9-11. Coffee was a problem during Igor. I was pounding with a hammer beans wrapped in a dish towel over a rock. I now have a hand grinder. We roast our own beans and always order about three times a year green beans so that would last 5yrs or more by not making such big wasteful pots. Having seeds and access to water is what is needed and most gardeners are probably the most valued leaders in a community in a major disaster. Knowing fermentation and long term storage like salting fish and meats and solar energy, etc. Should be standard to have prep for a month at least. |

I get a kick out of the ones who have a gardens worth of seed in a can, and think it's as easy as planting them.

during the 10 day outage, it was a nasty ice storm and never got above freezing. a recipe for armageddon in the south. about one month after all clear, some lady says she lost all her food in the refridgerator.
i said to myself, why didn't you put it outside? common sense is a big commodity during times like these. |

Yeah... The preppers are an odd bunch. I'm an expert at pooping in the woods. Does that count? I'm not hard core, though. I like my toilet paper. (TMI?) |

In West Texas in the winter our back porch was the refrigerator for beer and meat.
Where is the beer? It is on the back porch. How are you keeping it cold? It is 29 degrees outside. Oh. I cannot believe someone was was so stupid as to let food spoil in the winter during a power outage. We even had an old car we put stuff in the keep critters out of it. This is the time of year you defrost your freezer if it isn't frost free for crying out loud. Worth |

Not a pepper but I'm sure we could last a long time with all my bulk pantry ingredients. Might get old without fresh produce, eggs and dairy.

Plus there is the water glass and mineral oil method of storing fresh eggs. I noticed the store is starting to put the Velveeta and powdered Parmesan cheese in the coolers now. Are you kidding me. Worth |

I think the answer to that question revolves around population density for the most part, and climate to a lesser extent. I happen to live in a very rural area next to lakes and a vast wildlife refuge. My grandparents were some of the last houses to get public utilities on the road I live on now. City water didn't come until the late 1950's. We might have to live like a man named Jed, poor mountaineer who barely kept his family fed, but we'll get by.

Not a prepper but as self sufficient as I can be. chickens... which I will butcher and eat if I had to, neighbor has cows... there are plenty of wild edibles if you know what to look for, I have a park grill to cook on and plenty of wood for fires, a solar cooker and can as much as I can every Fall. just need salt and pepper for flavoring.
