Tom Wagner's creation - Casady's Folly

This is certainly one of the most gorgeous looking tomatoes which has very good taste - Tom, thank you for sharing the seeds!

It is very nice, meaty and sweet, dark red color inside and zig-zag golden stripes outside. It will grow well in containers, as it is not a large plant.

It is the first striped and elongated tomato I actually liked.

Tom, if you are reading this, can you share some information about the parents?

I didn't know that Tom was sharing seeds of Casady's folly. It was one of about 22 of his varieties that I trialed for him many years ago, maybe the mid-90's, at his request.

He asked me to not share seeds and I didn't, with one exception and that was Verde Claro to Craig b'c Craig was also supposed to be trialing them and for some reason I've now forgotten he didn't, other than Verde Claro.

Some that were trialed by me that you might recognize were Verde Claro, Chile Verde, Casady's Folly, Brandystripe on both RL and Angora foliage, and many others I can't think of right now.

I should ask Tom if he's now distributing seeds for these why can't I.

Amy lists both Casady's Folly and Chile Verde and cites no seed source so apprently Tom doesn't want them listed or distributed as I see it.

Ah, another one was Papa Grape which is Green Grape on PL foliage.

Was parentage ever established? I am guessing Speckled Roman was one? The BER tendency attributed to this variety suggests this among other factors such as shape, color and habit.

As I said above I trialed Casady's Folly for Tom way back in the early 90's and Striped Roman/Speckled Roman, found by John Swenson, an SSE member ( he changed the original name from Striped to Speckled, wasn't released by him until 1997.

So Striped/Speckled Roman could not have been a parent of Casady's Folly. Almost all paste types that I've grown, and Casady's is one of them, are more susceptible to BER as well as to Early Blight (A. solani)

Tom had asked me not to share seeds of it, I kept that promise and it was he who then started sharing seeds with others and then Amy Goldman first listed it in the SSE YEarbook only in 2010.

Back in the early 90's when I first grew it it certain was a novelty at the time as to shape and coloration, and the link above tells you that Tom's Banana Legs was one of the parents.

Huh, looks exactly like my Striped Roman though I've never had BER with my plants so I guess I'll stick with SR. They sure are pretty tomatoes!

I grew these last year from seeds purchased from Baker Creek. It was a very productive plant, but every single tomato had a bad case of BER and it never cleared up. I did taste a few and they were very good. I won't be growing it again, though.

NO BER either, following the first and second time and thrid time I grew it, so no doubt weather variability for some since all three times my plants were in my large tomato field, so same soil, same meager amendments, etc.

We did have a hot spell in 2010 and Christopher Columbus which I grew next to Casady's Folly also had BER. When the heatwave abated so did the BER on both plants. I attributed the BER to both the heat and tomato type as no other plants I grew that year had BER. Ami

Tania I think this is the tomato I have been looking for "Casady’s Folly" thanks to Tom Wagner posting I think I found the tomato 'I have been looking for and the proper name for it.

I did not know you had this tomatoes. I will order ASAP.
