Went to Lowe's in big town today and saw one of our local girls in the garden center. She told me our Lowe's will not open the garden center until the first of the year, soonest. Also, the main store won't be open until November sometime. They have extreme structural damage to repair. Our Lowe's is just 4 miles straight down the road from us.

I heard on the news that parts of the Caribbean expect to be without power for SIX MONTHS. If that happened here we'd be back to the stone age.

Have no doubt about it many of these people dont live much better than what they did 100 years ago.
The fancy hotels and resorts are just window dressing for the tourists. From last count they have a 45% population below the poverty line. Not everyone has running water nor electricity. I find this difficult knowing they are part of the USA. Meaning Porto Rico. Worth Last edited by Worth1; September 23, 2017 at 06:33 PM. |

now they are dealing with a a failing dam structure and no cell service to notify the residents. what a horrible situation for all of them. I just pray the dam doesn't give way but it doesn't look good for them.

Now they are running from the dam that is breaking, so sad for all of them.
Got a check today from TWIA for the fence and ceiling damages. It will cover everything if hubby does all the work but no way will it pay for a pro to do the ceilings. Good thing hubby knows a thing or two about sheet rock.

I just found out what TWIA insurance is. What is the reason people go with that insurance? Do regular insurance companies refuse to insure against wind damage in Texas? All I read was that it was the insurance "of last resort" in Texas. That doesn't sound good at all.

glad to hear they paid you something... I am afraid there are going to be people with nothing in their hand at the end of the claims....
Makes me slightly sick to think of the dam issue ....

Yes, Texas started TWIA when insurance companies refused to cover for windstorm damages years ago. The only way people can get insured is to use them. Just got my renewal notice in the mail today. It's $2,267 for next year beginning 10/31/17. We also have to have flood and homeowner's insurance here.

Wow, that sucks. Is that all of Texas or just coastal areas? I am a little surprised they don't have something like National Flood Insurance. 3 different insurances. That is called being insurance poor.

TWIA will pay out for all covered homes, they have to. Problem is a lot of people don't buy insurance and will be left in the cold because of it. I wish they would all realize if they would buy the insurance we would all pay lower because they spread it out to everyone.

The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) is a program created by the Congress of the United States in 1968 through the National Flood Insurance Act of 1968 (P.L. 90-448). The program enables property owners in participating communities to purchase insurance protection, administered by the government, against losses from flooding, and requires flood insurance for all loans or lines of credit that are secured by existing buildings, manufactured homes, or buildings under construction, that are located in a community that participates in the NFIP https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nation...urance_Program |

Today they picked up the huge debris pile in our yard. Tomorrow they will be back for the next one that's sitting out back. Those are some huge trucks they use with a claw hand to pick stuff up.
