Cherokee Purple and fused blooms
This my third time growing this variety and have noticed that the first or second bloom of each plant has been fused with either 2 or 3 blossoms. None of them have actually set fruit but thought it was weird that it has done it everytime, and from 2 different seed sources. Only 3 plants mind you but that has been my short experience with the variety. Anyone else have similiar occurences with the variety?

Duane, I find fused blossoms on the earliest blossoms for many varieties, especially PL varieties, so don't see Cherokee Purple as being any different from many other varieties that tend to do that.
And it's one reason why I don't save seeds from first formed fruits; just too much of a probability of xed seeds with insect activity being greatest in the beginning of summer where I live as well as the fused blossom problem leading to fused fruits.

Interesting info Carolyn. Since it was the only variety that had displayed that characteristic, I had no idea that it was fairly common. I take it from what you say that it is more common in PL varieties but is not rare in RL like the CP. Thanks for the info and your reply.

The same thing happens to me when I get fused blossoms. I only get them early in the season.

Here's what you could get from a fused CP. This one weighted over 4 lbs.

Surprisingly even. And night temps are already low to mid-60's on a regular basis. Inching towards that no-man's-land of humid 70's when tomatoes just decorate your yard and give you nothing in return for all that babying.
I really wanted to get my tomatoes in the ground Feb 21st. Growing tomatoes in Houston is a race... Last edited by feldon30; March 24, 2007 at 08:37 AM. |

weather is very similar here Feldon, about as good as it gets here for fruitset, but I need more blooms! Brandywine dropped its first set of blossoms, few more getting ready to open and its 3ft tall already. It just seems like the plants are a little slow to bloom.
