Prepped my Surrogate Raised Bed for the Winter
Today I put the finishing touches on my Surrogate raised bed and is ready for it's annual winter hibernation. A coworker brought me 3 bags of fresh horse droppings which I covered the bed with. Then put 3 bags of Bio-compost over the horse droppings and it will be ready for planting next May.
I went no till on this bed 3 years ago and this is how I have been prepping it each fall. Gets better each year and next year I'm declaring war on the mouse/rat population which have developed a taste for heirloom tomatoes. Ami

Awesome Bed Ami,
Just wondering, have you ever tried making compost tea based on horse droppings ? Also, wish you the best on your war against the mice and rats, and hope you win Best Regards, OddBall |

Ami....other than the Pied Piper, I have no solution for rats, but mice are easy. Build a few
wood boxes like cigar boxes (use screws on the top for access). Drill one hole in a side wall about the size of a nickel. Put several poison bait bars in each box and place them under buildings, near the garden, etc. Soon.....no mice. We used to dread getting to our Canada cabin in the spring as the mouse evidence was everywhere, Since using these boxes, we haven't seen a trace in probably eight years. BTW, I replace bait spring and fall. |

Beautiful!! Kilroyscarnival's cats would probably solve your mice and rat problem too.

I have already renamed die Kätzchen: Eins, Zwei, und Drei. However, Customs may not allow them to travel.
