EEK - Is this a pair of WASP Nests on a Carmen Pepper Branch?
I was admiring the Carmen pepper starting to ripen, when I LOOKED CLOSER AND SAW THIS! Ugh, the thought of reaching in and touching this is unsetteling.
It is only on the one branch, and only this plant. What is this mass? Up close it looks like dried mud. Friend or foe? - Lisa |

that looks like dogvomit fungus. not a mud dauber nest. and even if it was a mud dauber they are solitary and fairly reclusive. I have never been stung by one except for pinching it. they are not aggressive wasps like a paper wasp or hornet.

+1 https://wimastergardener.org/article...uligo-septica/ has more info. It is a bit coarser in appearance than I usually see. Might also be an egg mass of some sort, but I don't recognize it.
A wasp nest would have an entry/exit hole so you could check that carefully. Solitary wasps are never the problem that social nesters present. Last edited by PhilaGardener; June 25, 2018 at 07:30 AM. |

So not a wasp nest, glad I escaped experiencing that. a bee sting in the grocery parking lot was enough for me. I wondered if it might be some type of gall if it was not an insect nest. In other reports of this "dog vomit" infestation , there was a terrible smell and the virus came on mulch. Not the case here. I practically had my nose up to it. The plant is in a container and mulched with straw. Well, for sure I won't be eating "THAT" pepper!
