Default Purple Haze

Hi,

Just wondering how many members are growing Purple Haze this season??? Are they F1 plants or F2's from seed?

Wondering on the leaf type and growth habits... Will post a few pics, after comments made!

Out of the four seeds I received from a very generous member, one turned out to be RL, two are PL, one never germinated. One PL was slightly mutated upon early growth, though is growing well now. the one RL got attacked by the cat and never recovered... One of the PL is very strong and healthy, outgrowing the other PL. Looks like they are growing similiar to a Black Cherry, with PL from Brandywine. Haven't noticed and Cherokee Purple traits as of yet...

Take care,
Randy

I'm not 100% sure, but I think they are F2's.

I received seed from "Wild" in CA - and she got a really big fruit on what looked like a PL plant.
I've got 2 seedlings up and will report back (no sign of true leaf type yet).

I do not believe that seeds for Purple Haze F1 were made available to general public.

I suspect that all the Purple Haze seeds that are now in circulation among the T-ville and other tomato forums members are F2 seeds, and given the parents of this tomato, it is natural to expect a mix of both RL and PL in seedlings, same as with fruit colors and sizes.

Is anyone intentionally trying to de-hybridize it? I am sure it will be lots of fun!

Cheers,

I do have some Purple Haze seeds that I am growing this year, so I can report later on what the original hybrid is like. I don't know what generation of Brandokee was crossed to the Black Cherry (as far as stability), or if that one parent was a PL. I think I will save seeds too this year and grow some of them out.

Should be interesting to hear what you get.

Ordered a couple from Laurels Hierlooms about three or four months ago to make sure I get them. Should be arriving in a week or two. I have them growing in different locations but plan to isolate a cutting at my mother-in-laws apt patio. Will save seeds from that one.
I hope they taste as good as people say. If they are a cross between Cherokee Purple, Black Cherry and Brandywine, how bad could they be?

Just checked her web site and she is sold out for 2008.

I hope to bring some to Tomatopalooza. That is if I don't snack on them in the car on the way

I got some Purple Haze through the SSE yearbook, which I assume is F2 or later. Just started them, so nothing is up yet. I guess I'll be expecting to see some variety!

I have 3 Purple Haze plants growing this year. One is RL, one is PL, and my third is actually from 2 seeds, one turned out to be PL (left) and one RL (right). Will be quite interesting to see the fruit and taste variations.

OK folks, I will share my little secret as well...

I am growing 7 seedlings from F2 seeds. 3 of them are PL and 4 are RL. I wish I started at least 3 times as many, as I wanted to get as much variability captured as possible...

It sure would be interesting to compare everyone's results at the end of summer!

Tania,

Sounds good to me! Let's plan on meeting at one of those Fairmont Resorts up in your neck of the woods, to do a Purple Haze taste test from all of us growing it out this year.

VERY INTERESTING thread. Can hardly wait to see / hear the results, especially with respect to taste!

Here are two images of Purple Haze F2's.
Both are PL and germinated the same day, one slightly more vigorous than the other... Largest is 12" tall(30 cm), smaller one is only 7" tall(18 cm).

I'll update pics when they get outside and climatize!

Cheers,
Randy

Purple Haze are getting to be over 18" tall, one over 24" in height... Both are developing flowers, which is kind of early... Which of their heritage matures so early???

Wow Randy!!

You up in Canada are at least a week earlier with your Purple Haze than I am in California.

My Purple Haze are about 20" high as of today, and their flower buds are just now appearing, so it looks like you will be able to give the early report this year!
