Default Your Top Ten Grow List for 2008

It's that time again, and we all love lists. My list went up to around 50, then down to around 25, and now it's climbing toward 40 again. All I know to do is add more beds!

I learn a lot from grow lists because you see a pattern of definite favorites, and also some oddities that you sometimes never heard of.

To start things, I'll list my preliminary Top Ten, in no special order. Subject to change or course, every time I visit here or see a seed catalog!

1. Brandywine Sudduth
2. Mortgage Lifter (want to try Estler's this year)
3. Earl's Faux
4. Brandyboy
5. Rostovo
6. Omar's
7. Cherokee Purple
8. Paul Robeson
9. Kellogg's Breakfast
10. Chapman

Just ten? And I, the maker of the list, should have known better! I should have included more room to list NAR, C-Tex, New Big Dwarf, Black Cherry, Bloody Butcher, Red Penna, Stump of the World, Henderson's WinsAll, Coustralee, Zogola...see the pattern?! Ok, ok, you aren't limited to just ten!

Neves Azorean Red
Goliath
Black Mountain Pink
JD's Special C-Tex
Marianna's Peace - not productive last year but oh was it good

But my main list is a mile long. Cut down day is coming.

That's why I made it a top ten list (which I couldn't stick with either!) to see the very favorites. You have 7-8 on your list that will make many lists. That's how I learned to settle on the overall favorites (which I knew nothing about when I came here).

Good list!

Yes the bottom ten always seem to give the most trouble! Good point!

Here's an "approximate" top ten, based on my really wanting to grow them(or anticipation), not past experience...although I've grown a few of these before before. In no particular order.

Wes
Red Penna
Coustralee
Opalka
Brandywine(Sudduth)
Dr. Lyle
Chapman
Red Brandywine(Landis Valley)
Stump of the World
Milka's Red Bulgarian

barkeater,
so true. The last ten or so to make the cut is the hardest. I have a good amount to choose from this year via trades that I want to grow them all but just don't have the room.

It's painful telling the kiddies they are going to have to wait 'til next year to be grown.!

My top 10 from last year were:

Green Giant ( haven't tried GMG yet. Is it really better?)
Black Fom Tula - always a winner
Kelloggs Breakfast - ditto
Tom's Yellow Wonder - this was great. Thanks Tom!
Kosovo - better than Anna Russian
Cherokee Green - my fave until Green Giant came along.
Pork Chop - loved it!
Beauty King - Brad is the King!
Cherokee Purple - of course.
Cosmonaut Volkov - FINALLY, a red that I love!
Dr Lyle (I know that's 11, but I can't leave it off of the list)

Top ten, in no particular order. Each is there for its own reasons: it may be earliness, taste, productivity, reliability etc.

Cherokee Purple
Galina's Yellow
(Not) Orlov Yellow (I received seeds labelled so, but it's not)
Green Zebra
Snow White
Black Cherry
Green Giant
Jaune Flammée
Kimberly

Hmmm...that's only nine. I'll have to give it some more thought.

Ten? How can I list just ten when I have 15 on my ever-growing list so far?

Ok, I'll leave off the cherries (I mainly grow these for my husband) and the ones I'm still anticipating receiving in trades...

In no particular order:

1. Neves Azorean Red
2. Aunt Ruby's GG
3. Green Giant
4. Stupice
5. Polish
6. Reynaldo
7. Ernesto
8. Jeff Davis
9. Peach/Rouge D'Irak
10. Marvelous

There will be at least 6 more, and the list is growing...

This is probably the most complicated year to figure out what to grow - the three main categories being Must Grow for the dwarf project, old favorite must grows to eat, and Must Grow to finally try! Even more complicating is our drought...will we be even able to have a garden?!?!

Dwarf Project top 10: (sort of...I need to grow out several plants of each of these, as they are the most advanced - and this doesn't even take in to consideration the various new F1s, dwarfs from last year's F1s, etc....I suspect I will have at least 50-60 plants in grow bags again this year)

1. Summertime Green
2. Summertime Gold
3. Dwarf Sweet Sue
4. Dwarf Mr. Snow
5. Dwarf Wild Fred
6. Dwarf Emerald Giant
7. Dwarf Kelly Green
8. Dwarf Jade Beauty
9. Dwarf Beryl Beauty
10a. Dwarf Russian Swirl
10b. Dwarf Rosella Giant
10c. Barossa Fest
10d. Barossa Beauty
10e. Fairlight
10f. Dwarf Sunshine
10g. Wala

Old Favorites - indeterminates for the pots:

1. Cherokee Purple
2. Cherokee Chocolate
3. Cherokee Green
4. Brandywine
5. Sungold
6. Mexico Midget
7. Black Cherry
8. Green Giant
9. Little Lucky
10a. Lucky Cross
10b. Lillian's Yellow

New ones that I just must try (there may be others...need to look through my seed list):

1. Linnie's Oxheart
2. Ashleigh
3. Tom's Yellow Wonder
4. Grub's Mystery Green
5. Casey's Pure Yellow
6. Grandpa Ludolph's German Red

Praying for rain here...and plenty of it...and soon!
