You need at least two. I tried growing one last year and only had one tomitillo. It had pollinated with it's buddy at the nursery. I then did a search on here and found out you need at least two. I have two in the garden right now and am hoping one does not die. I would suggest you search your question here and read what everyone has say.

I did a search and that's why I'm confused. It's about 50-50. Half of the folks here say they're self fertile, the other half say you need two. I guess I'll just ask at the nursery when I go buy the plants . . .

I'm having my dad look it up in Hortis, but I found this reference on ibiblio:
http://www.ibiblio.org/pfaf/cgi-bin/...salis+ixocarpa " The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by Bees. " |

I just bought two more plants and will put them near the others. I asked at the nursery that I bought the plant from last year and they did not know :-). I think it is better to err on the side of planting two plants to make sure. I figure I can make preserves and give away millions. I just don't want to give a single plant all kinds of care and not get any.
