Tom's Yellow Wonder

A very interesting tomato ..indeed
Seeds were sent to me by our very own Tomstrees.

The first one I had was good and ripe, I wouldn't say over-ripe as the consistency was not mushy.
It had sweetness and a blush of crimson that strongly reminded me of a real good bi-color.


The tomato above is shown just to the left of this big boy. It was 8 ounces.


That big fella is more the norm than the little one. This tomato plant can turn out some whoppers. I call that shape 'Popeye chin' it's not catfaced or multi-lobed per se ..It just looks like Popeye's chin after Bluto let him have it. You get a lot of Popeye chins with Tom's Yellow Wonder.

This is a juicy complex tasting tomato. The consistency of the flesh is perfect, it melts in your mouth.
You get a burst of flavor right off the bat, not over-whelming but fruity by no means mild.
The over-all flavor is mellow and fruity with a hint of sweetness after the initial burst.

I'm glad I grew it, it has out performed any other large yellow in my garden this year.

am glad TYW has won you over.

Tom is a sharp fellow who although
believed in this mater, has remained
nearly silent and guardedly optimistic
about it until further grow-outs.

I still have hope for a decent mater
or two from a surrogate garden, but
will have to get there soon before
they and their seeds vanish....JJ61

Truly a "working name"

Glad you enjoyed it Bully ~
As I've meantioned before,
I initially bought a "Wonderlight"
tomato at a roadside stand -
I saved seed, but the following year,
thats not what showed up in my garden!

As Bully meantioned this is way different
from your average "yellow" in regards to taste
and size ...
I was fortunate enough to find out
recently from my Aunt who knows that
lady that grew the first
tom, that her plants of "Wonderlight"
were inbetween rows of Persimmon & Pineapple ~
So that lets me know alittle bit of the back ground
of where the cross came from ...

Its still unstable because my fruits this year have a
"point" at the bottom, and they looked similiar but not the exact SAME as Bullys fruits ~

I still have to mail one up to Carolyn for tasting
and further observation (locules, flavor, etc.)
I will become a memeber of SSE this year -
but in the meantime, if you would like to

I've got fruits on my TYW's, golfball sized now but hoping for some "44DD" bra sized ones. Thanks Tom for a real real good one. It pays to be curious and save seed from the unusual ones. Saving "contraband" ain't all bad !!!!

this morning all green toms on my plants have
pointed ends ~
I think thats the direction in fruit shape I want to go ~

While we are on nice yellows, the Reinhard Kraft Green Giant seed regular leaf seedling I planted ended up producing many of these -






Not the Reg Leaf green I was hoping for, but a delicious, flavorful, fine yellow that is on the tart side...a keeper (of course, it may not be stable yet...so more work on it is needed)

Ooooh, Craig... I'd say that's definitely a keeper. Do you think that's a cross?

I really like the look of the interior.. Yellow all the way through, too.. I would have expected more marbling, but I think the thin pink ribbon in the center looks even better. What is the texture like?

I finally have some photos to show. Today (8-4), there are two ready with a couple more on the vine. The ripe tomatoes look like some of the other photos, but the green ones do not have the stripes; more of a blotchy look and the smaller green fruit has almost a heart shape to it complete with a tip. Our county fair will judge the tomatoes on Monday and these will be entered along with 6 or 7 of my other heirlooms so I can't cut them open and eat them until Monday night. More reports then.

ok, i finally have something to report. i do not have a digial camera. the only tomato i have not eaten is aunt gertie's gold and prue but both could be eaten today. tyw is still a day+ away from eating so it is the last to produce an edible tomato this season. this is rather late since agg is always the last tomato to be edible.

on saturday 8/4 i picked my 1st tyw. i took it cuz it was close to finishing and i protect tomatoes by letting them finish inside. it was also cracking across the base.

the open crack is 4" long with another 1" at each end that is not open for a total length of 5". at the worst it is 1/4" wide at the most open and is 1 1/2" long across the blosoom end.
this tomato is GIGANTIC! i'd guess it weighs about 3 pounds it's 6" X 5" and 3 1/2" tall. there's 1 radial crack at the stem end that is 1" long. there is also an open crater 1 1/4" wide, 1 " long and almost 1/2" deep. these top cracks are old and dried up.

the last green streaks on it have nearly turned yellow over the past 12 hours. there's a pink blush on the blosoom end that is in the interior (i have not eaten a tyw yet) and the blush radiates from the bottom in streaks towards the stem end. most of that blush stops after 1 to 2" but 1 section has a 1" wide streak that goes to the top of the tomato and then spreads across the tomato parallel to it's equator. this thing is so big it could be a planet so equator is an apt term!

i think this could be ready to eat in another 24 hours.

there were a few dark spots (concentric circles almost) that looked like water or some problem but over the past few days it is less pronounced as they have lightened considerably.

the 2nd tomato was picked yesterday and is less ripe. it too is large maybe 2 pounds 5" X 4 1/2" and 3 1/2" high. both are DENSE HEAVY. this 2nd one has a pink blush too at the blosoom end. it is only 1/2" in diameter with radial streaks that travel towards the stem end for 1 -3". it has 2 radial cracks at the stem end. one travels past the base but it is very shallow and narrow, it's 1/4" wide and deep for the 1st 1" from the stem then mitigates into a minor crack.

there is still a few spots of green on it and i'd guess it needs another 3-4 days to ripen.

my 1st one was EXCELLENT! it was LARGE maybe 2 1/2 pounds, perhaps 3 pounds! it had a red blush at the blossom end that travelled thru the tomato to the stem. it was creamy and just wonderful! if i did not know this was a yellow tomato i'd have thought it was a red, the flavor was that good! i have eaten 3 others but the 1st was the best tho they are good too. i have 5 on the kitchen table waiting for them to ripen.
