What are we growing for SETTFest V?
Here is my lineup for this year:
Purple Haze Cherokee Yellow Black Cherry Southern Night Anana's Noir Black Krim Arkansas Traveler Soiux Church Green Zebra Cherokee Purple Purple Calabash Homestead Large Red Cherry Berkley Tie Dye JD C-tex Hopefully I'll be able to bring a repesentative for each variety. I sometimes lose one or two to some problem or calamity. We had a chance of rain and hail last night. Didn't get either. I don't know if we dodged the bullet or missed the boat. Sure is dry here. |

This is still a bit of a sore spot with me. I had a fantastic plant-out planned for this year, arranged around my tasting faves from last year's SETTFest. But I did not get to plant a single one of those varieties --not one! I was forced to go with a back-up selection of varieties, most of which were not at the top of my prefs list.
Anyway... ATKINSON! Black Krim Hugh's (only one survived --some sort of virus, not [as initially reported] verticillium [and no one else affected, so that's the end of that] Goose Creek Aunt Ginnie's Purple Kosovo Spudakee Earl's Faux ("Oh look! Fruit-set! I may actually harvest this year!!!") Marmande Clear Pink Early Lemon Boy Golden Boy Lemon Zebra (or whatever it is they're calling it) (BHN) 444 And no snarking about the last four entries! The 'Boys were planted b/f I remembered that Hugh's is a yellow (and, such as it turned out, I'm glad I have 'em), and I am not above trialing mass-market hybrids just in case there's an attack of something that requires VFN- or similar resistance. (Additional: depending on the timing, I may sneak in some samples of Park's Whopper, Mountain Spring and Sun Master from my mother's beds in Beaumont)
