Hogweed can be dangerous to people. Its sap causes a change in human skin, effectively making it a capacitor for the sun's energy. Exposure to sunlight causes blisters.
That's freaky. |

Some of the pics remind me of Dill umbrels. Sounds super bad.

While that Hogweed stuff is fairly rare (at least near me), Wild Parsnip is quite common and produces a similar burn. If you cut it with a mower or weed whacker and sap gets on you and then is hit by sunlight, you will get a bad chemical burn. It looks a lot like dill including the yellow flowers. It's VERY wide spread here along Wisconsin roadways. It was in full bloom last month and now is in a dried brown stage. http://dnr.wi.gov/wnrmag/html/storie...99/parsnip.htm
We also have another dangerous plant that looks somewhat like a smaller version of the giant hogweed -- Water Hemlock. There was a recent posting on Facebook about how poisonous this plant is. A dog walking with it's family found and chewed on a bit of water hemlock root. It died before they could get it to a vet. We have a few of these plants growing in a swampy area near my farm. They are bigger than the wild parsnip and the flowers are white but don't last as long as the the wild parsnip. Fortunately they also don't seem to spread as easily as the wild parsnip. http://www.ars.usda.gov/Main/docs.htm?docid=9996 Be aware of what may be dangerous around you. Carol |
