actually... they do. ask a question and you have people willing to share their knowledge/experience with you... not just one, but many. not just about gardening either. ask about anything and they help if they can. I suppose if I asked about medicare I would get answers even. That is a huge black hole about right now and I am floundering but we are getting through it. Since we aren't medicare eligible I never gave it much thought. now I am navigating it for my inlaws....I feel sorry for all of you who need it and have to use it...

I struggled with the Medicare mysteries too when I began taking care of my Dad after Mom passed away.
Most older people seem to use what is called Original Medicare and also buy a supplement which pays for the additional 20% of care that Medicare does not pay. This is all that was available when they went on Medicare. Now we have Medicare Advantage plans available. These are plans offered by private insurance companies and usually no supplement is needed with them. Their plans take the place of Original Medicare. If you choose a Medicare Advantage program then the automatic Medicare deduction that comes out of your in-laws social security payment goes to the private insurance company and this is part or even all of their premium that is due to that company. Many Medicare Advantage programs include drug coverage (Medicare Part D) but Original Medicare does not and you have to buy it separately. Hope this helps. |

So sorry for your loss.
see what I mean?! I am learning, though. makes me wonder how the elderly navigate it when it is difficult for us to just jump in and do it.

I thought the same thing. Dad could never have figured this out on his own and the elderly do not always use computers either and that would make it so much harder. If you make phone calls, then you will end up on the phone on hold seemingly FOREVER.
I had a Humana rep come to the house and explain things and that really helped me to understand the process. |

I am the epitome of elderly as many here already know, turning 77 in June.
I am very happy with original Medicare, a Supplemental and a drug coverage program as well, mainly for the high cost of pen insulin. And I will not switch to an advantage plan ever since listening to others since Idon't think it covers expenses as well as orignal Medicare, parts A and B,and Supplemental, mine is with United Health Care where you have a choice of I think seven plans. But getting back to the original question about people here do care,I couldn't agree more,on almost any topic, but in the past few years I'm not the only one who has seen some problems. Specifically, those who ask for seeds that someone mentions in a specific thread when only those reading that thread would have access. To me that's just not fair. And those Pming folks to ask for seeds, and I've received quite a few e-mails and PM's about that from folks who have been Pmed asking about seeds, saying that they have very few seeds but don't want to disappoint the person. If anyone has seeds to share they should make an offer in the seed subforum,TRADE, if not asking for trades,as I have been doing. Some will post in the WANTED Forum and list what they want and at the same time say what they have to trade in return. Then Worth in his thread pointed out other problems for those who have an agenda,as I put it, and only want their way of thinking to prevail I'm hoping that the Global Mods can discuss the problems along with Mischka, but he has been so busy, well I'm hoping he will have time. Speaking for myself now,I think it's almost time to say no new applications for membership sinceTville has grown so much and speaking also as a Global Mod I know that's true for me in terms of trying to keep up, answer questions,do searches for folks,etc.. But yes,in general I do think that folks here care very much about the site, those who post, give advice, etc. Carolyn

This site is like a huge Buffet table. Take only what you need and leave the rest for others to partake...

I thought of that Karen. If a mod would like to move this thread there - it's fine by me.

I used promix, it worked fine. Many others would say some kind of 5-1-1, but I haven't tried anything else to compare the promix to.
