Default Tom's visit

Tom wagner came by July 8th, showed me how to pollinate potatoes by hand his way.He was quite informative, interesting, and witty as usual; and we got quite a bit done. I took a great video of Tom immasculating flower buds (some were quite small)and pollinateing them with collected pollen.I am haveing trouble loading it as I'm not computer litterate at all. Will get it up for everyone to see as soon as i can though.

I had fun showing how to cross potatoes.

I remember using Tollocan pollen to cross to a plant of Joe Kaighin. Joe Kaighin is one of my new lines which has Tollocan as a great grandparent. The idea is to get a high percent of Late Blight resistant TPS. Also crossed with that pollen was A00502-12 which is a Mexican late blight stock that originated from Aberdeen Idaho. Reputed resistance to purple top (phyotplasma). Tollocan is a Mexican variety that does well for me and has the Race 8 resistance I need.

Forgot what I crossed to the day length neutral line 97H32-14....Wingnut liked the foliage....blue stems with green leaves with a pretty ruffle to the leaves. I am hoping it was Tollocan which is a short day clone.

Other crosses were Red Thumb flowers crossed with Red Ox...one of my new intense red/red potato clones. Red Ox was also crossed to African Lass and Negima....a couple of Negro Y Azul hybrids.

Skagit Valley Gold pollen was crossed to a long list of Solanum tuberosum subsp. andigenum from all over South America....and a few phureja types. I am hoping to get a least some seed from the andigenum hybrids since the SVG will have to have unreduced gametes to set seed.

Skagit Valley Gold was crossed to hybrids of it called Skagit Plenty and Skagit McKenna. Backcrosses are important to get renewed prototypes of SVG,

The only tomato cross I made was a plant of Tigerpillar using Sun Sugar pollen.

I have to get down there again and cross hundreds more lines. With over 125 clones in the garden...the permutations of potential crosses are over 15,000 combinations. I actually get disappointed every time I make crosses....I think...I coulda done more!

Those years when I had over 100,000 seedling hills of TPS out in the field were a tormented time for me to decide what to cross. The permutations of crosses then were near one billion! And to think no seed alike.

Most of the crosses Tom Made seem to have taken, and we have many berries forming. I have continued with some SVG, Some skagit plenty, as well as denali as the pollen donor. I will be doing a number of other crosses tonight.

I also have large numbers of berries forming with caribe as the pollen doner. The bees have hit the patch hard the last few days, so there WILL be many OP berries as well!
