Horseradish grinder
Way back years ago, my father in law used to grind horseradish root and we'd have fresh horseradish for weeks. When we built the house here at the home farm, I revived the horseradish patch.
Unfortunately, the grinder we used is long gone. No doubt borrowed by someone when we quit doing our own butchering. So I'm on the lookout for a good grinder, that will work on tough roots. Any recommendations?

I just wash it really well, peel off the skin and chop it up and run it through my food processor. I have never had a problem(unless you count the profuse tears running down my face and the yuck dripping from my nose! ) I have another friend who does the same thing in her blender.

I used a blender with an extension cord and ground it out of the house....

Dad used mom's little hand grinder. Dad turned the grnder and I fed it and mom got it ready. Wash peek and chop and then grind. Sure was god stuff on the gamey deer.

Oh, I did grind it in the house the first time...Never again....
I haven't had horseradish in many years and almost miss it... I get my zip from hot peppers that politely die after frost and don't spread like horseradish.... Jeanne |

Thanks folks. I guess I never thought about a food processor. I'll check around for a used one.
LoL @ the crying & drippy nose. I remember that part well. But yummity yum....worth it in my book. Nothing like fresh horseradish on a fried bologna sammich!

I know..Horseradish is the Kami Kazi of all vegetables. My hubby planted it way out on a big pile of aged horse manure with shavings. He does not even water it and it has taken over the pile (allthough it is about 50 feet from a pond so maybe there is some leaching of water going on...) Thankfully, there is nothing out there it can get into. Only thing I know is worse is Blackberry or Rasberry plants...they are like tunnel rats. We had to dig a large patch of them out and it took three years and Roundup to finally get rid of them (we relocated those plants out near the horseradish! They can "duke it out" for supremacy.) Those are both things that do really well here...horseradish and Rasberries. Rasberry jam is my all-time favorite. My husband has a new recipe for "pickled horseradish chutney" he will be trying out...I can't stand the stuff. Have you been warm? 75 degrees here yesterday. In the 70's since last Tuesday.

We have been only high 50's and raining now...Supposed to get to 17 on Thursday night for a low...Feeling a little pessimistic for the greens in my cold frame, I have just reseeded another batch...
We do have green grass for the critters to chase right now, but 17 should squelch that for awhile too... My husband grew up on the South Fork out of Cody, but we don't get back very often... Jeanne |
