I grow garlic in front of my tomatoes and have for a number of years. I have raised beds and 2 rows on the outer sides of my enclosed garden (deer netting surrounds it). I plant 2 rows of garlic in the fall in the front; last year a total of 90 cloves in the ground, this year 100. I plant tomatoes in the spring; a row of 8 on each side.

The garlic normally gets harvested in July allowing more room for the tomatoes as they take over the space. The tomatoes will get pulled after the first frost in the fall and a few weeks later the next year's garlic crop goes in.

I test my soil in the spring and every few years I will test again in the fall as well.
